Mike Woodson urges J.R. Smith to keep shooting and sixth man scores 20 off
bench for Knicks

J.R. Smith rarely has been accused of being gun-shy on a basketball court.

In fact, the New Jersey native doesn’t ever recall hearing a coach yell at
him to shoot the ball more often, as Mike Woodson did in the first quarter
Sunday against the Sixers.

of the Knicks’ 100-84 win at the Garden. “I shot a few bad shots (in the
first half) and started hearing a few boos from the crowd, and that kind of
messed with my head a little bit.

“But (Woodson) was telling me to keep shooting, so I’ve gotta keep shooting.
”

Smith, who scored 11 points off the bench in the Knicks season-opening win
Friday over Miami, entered Sunday’s game with a little more than five
minutes remaining in the first quarter. He quickly missed a contested layup,
but then passed up a couple of open looks before the quarter ended, including
one ill-advised pass for a turnover that caused the fans and his coach to
grumble.

“I was yelling at him to shoot the ball,” Woodson said. “Shooters are
going to take some bad shots. That is just the nature of the game. I don’t
mind that, as long as he is defending and doing the necessary things to help
us win. Offensively, I have to help him because is so talented in terms of
being able to create a shot and make shots himself.”

Smith started firing in the second quarter and eventually found his groove
after halftime, nailing three straight three-pointers in the final session as
the Knicks pulled away. The sixth man finished with 20 points -- second-most
to Carmelo Anthony’s 27 -- on 8-of-15 shooting. He also had two steals and a
team-high nine rebounds as the Knicks improved to 2-0.

“That’s our emphasis, keep moving the ball, keep finding the open man, as
long as we do that, good things will happen,” said Smith, who averaged 12.5
points per game in 35 appearances for the Knicks last season. “A few times
we turned the ball over, but you have to expect that playing with new guys.
