Schedule Gives Knicks Little Time to Practice

MILWAUKEE — N.B.A. fans probably know what their team’s record is, but not
necessarily when its last full practice was. In the case of the Knicks, even
the players are probably not sure when it was, only that it has been a while.
Coach Mike Woodson knows it has been far too long since his team was in a
gymnasium learning new information and how to execute it.

The Knicks (9-4) were set to end a rough part of their season here Wednesday
night when they played the Milwaukee Bucks (7-5). In a 16-day stretch ending
Wednesday, the Knicks played 10 games, an endurance test that resembled what
they confronted during the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. Woodson has had
to wrestle with a choice: whether to hold full practices on days off or to
give the players, many of whom are in their 30s, time to rest before the next
game.

面對本賽季中一段艱難的賽程，尼克交出了9 －4 的成績。16 天10場比賽，是對老

Woodson chose the second option during the past two weeks. The last time the
Knicks had a full practice — which, unlike a pregame shootaround, includes
full-contact drills and scrimmages — was Nov. 14, the day before the Knicks
rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Spurs in
San Antonio, 104-100.

The Knicks then lost four of their next seven. They were on a 1-3 run
entering Wednesday’s game, beating lowly Detroit but losing to Dallas,
Houston and Brooklyn. Would more practices have kept the Knicks sharper? They
probably would have helped the team’s defense. In the last four games, the
Knicks had allowed an average of 107.5 points. The Nets were the only team
not to score at least 100 in that stretch.

“I’ve always felt that practice keeps you sharp in terms of rotations from
a defensive standpoint and on offense from an execution standpoint,” Woodson
said Wednesday before the Knicks’ shootaround. “We just haven’t had a
chance to practice. It’s been a tough schedule so far.”

In the past two weeks, the Knicks have not had two consecutive days without a
game. And one day off was Thanksgiving, which the Knicks, who were in
Houston, chose to treat as a full holiday.

Even Hurricane Sandy interfered with practice time. It postponed the Knicks’
 scheduled season opener, at Brooklyn, to Monday, a day the Knicks had
scheduled for a full practice.

“Sometimes when you don’t play well, and you have losses, you like to go
back and make adjustments and improvements,” forward Ronnie Brewer said. “

During their last practice, in San Antonio, the Knicks trained and prepared
for the Spurs for almost three hours. Tyson Chandler enjoys those kinds of
days. He knows that half of the current roster did not play for the Knicks
last season. And so, in his mind, the Knicks are still a young team, not yet
used to one another’s habits, and definitely in need of as much practice
time as possible.

becomes instinct,” Chandler said. “But we’ve played so many games that it
seems like each game we got a little bit away from our defensive principles.
It’s something we have to tighten up.”

Most teams use pregame shootarounds to have players stretch and become
reacquainted with the arena they will be playing in that evening. Woodson
also uses the shootaround time to look at film of the opponent.

Even before the regular season, Woodson had to confront the issue of how much
practice would be right for a team with so many older players. He chose not
to practice twice a day during training camp, although many other teams did.

But even with those precautions, injuries have occurred. Amar’e Stoudemire,
30, had knee surgery before the season opener. And Jason Kidd, 39, is out
with back spasms.

The Knicks may end their no-practice streak as soon as Thursday. Or Saturday.
Or Monday. Whenever it happens, Woodson has plenty of plays, ideas and tips
to pass along to his players.
