老湯座談
“It’s going to be a tremendous challenge for him,” Thomas said on Knicks
Blog Radio with Anthony Donahue on Monday night. “He never played in New
York and now he’s coaching there. There’s definitely going to be a lot of
obstacles that he has to overcome. The Knicks organization is one of the best
in the league and will put him in the right situation to be successful. But
you don’t know what kind of coach he’ll be. Knicks fans have to be patient
and give him time. I’m saying he’s a young coach like Jason Kidd. You just
have to be patient.”

老湯:"我想這對他來講是個很大的挑戰，他從未在紐約打過球，但她卻在這裡執教，這裡
可是有很多難關在等著他阿，尼克是這聯盟裡最棒的球團，這將會讓他有很好的機會獲得

“It shows how important it is to have professional players on a team to get
through moments when you’re having a funk, to stay collectively as a team,”
Thomas said.
Would the J.R. shoelace caper have happened if he had been there?
“I don’t think that would be something that would happen,” Thomas said. “
A veteran guy would’ve pulled him to the side and get in his ear, let him
know the importance of staying focused at the task at hand. When you have a
bunch of young guys, you don’t see that much looking out for one another. It
’s important to have veteran guys with a great amount of experience and
willing to share it.”

“I didn’t like the way my last season ended,” Thomas said.
談最後一次打球的體驗是在2013年尼克當時西部客戰五連敗，然後老湯舊傷退了。

Thomas added “the fans showed a lot of support” for playing in that game
despite the pregame X-ray that showed a bone spur.
On Carmelo Anthony re-signing, Thomas said, “I wasn’t surprised at all.
Everyone I came across in traveling and here in Dallas was: ‘What is Melo
going to do?’ I said, ‘He’s going back to New York.’ He loves it in New
York. I didn’t see him in a different jersey.”

Van Gundy also went into how Jackson and Fisher will likely use the triangle
offense, which will likely be in effect for just 75 percent of the game.
“When people talk about the triangle offense, they have a misconception,”
Van Gundy said. “Jackson ran the triangle for most of three quarters, until
the fourth quarter, when they ran ‘iso.’ It was a five-man team game for
three quarters, then he would ride his superstar player in the fourth
quarter, just like every NBA team.”

But Van Gundy thinks Shumpert needs to tweak his approach to do so.
“I thought he was on a good track. I thought he had a great rookie year. I
think the injury set him back significantly. I think either role confusion or
the lack of role acceptance has had him focusing too much on what he doesn’t
do well versus maximizing what he does do well,” Van Gundy said in an
interview on Anthony Donahue’s Internet radio show on The Knicks Blog.
“He should be an every-night wing defender. He should be a high-energy
offensive player who moves the ball selflessly, who when he gets his
opportunities to attack long closeouts he attacks and creates plays at the
rim for himself and his teammates,” Van Gundy told Donahue. “If he focuses
on doing what he does best, he’ll have a nice career, but oftentimes that’s
what derails younger players. Instead of narrowing what they do they’re
always trying to expand what they do so they end up playing to their
nonstrengths instead of playing to their strengths.”

JVG thinks Knicks will make playoffs: Van Gundy thinks the Knicks will be a
playoff team this season in the competitive East.
“I thought Mike Woodson did a great job under trying circumstances,” the
ESPN analyst said. “I think they’ll be a playoff team this year. I think
they’ll have a good year. How far they go -- a lot is going to depend on
matchups. Obviously the Eastern Conference has gone under some major changes.
”
Van Gundy also thinks Carmelo Anthony should continue to play power forward.
“I think in today’s game he’s a 4 man. I think he’ll continue to be a 4
man as he gets older in his career too,” the former coach told Donahue. “I
think he defends 4s better. I think he has advantages over 4s. You’ve got to
pair him with the right defensive center because obviously you need basket
protection.”

Van can’t wait for Knicks to bring back Ewing: Van Gundy coached Patrick
Ewing so it makes sense that he’d be fiercely loyal to him.
“I just can’t wait for the Knicks to bring him home someday in some
capacity ... he’s the best Knick ever. There’s a lot of great Knicks but as
far as the best Knick of all time it’s Patrick Ewing," he told Donahue.
On the Knicks’ decision to trade Ewing toward the end of his career, Van
Gundy said: “That was a horrible trade. If Patrick would have stayed the
evolution to a more guard-oriented offense would have been inevitable ... it
would have been fine.”

factor into the NBA season that still have to be managed. And so, now just
