The last time there was a thorough check of the Los Angeles Lakers' fragile
psyche, there were calls to bring in Dr. Phil to talk to, well, Dr. Phil
Jackson and other members of the dysfunctional franchise.

No need now. The Lakers have undergone one quick metamorphosis to become a
franchise that not only can win a NBA title now but stay on top of the league
for years to come.

The Pau Gasol deal was the biggest theft since the Lakers received Kobe
Bryant from Charlotte for Vlade Divac in 1996. Or, since obtaining Mychal
Thompson in 1986 for Frank Brickowski. Or, since the Lakers got Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar from Milwaukee for Brian Winters and Elmore Smith in 1975. Or,
since the Lakers received Wilt Chamberlain from Philadelphia for Darrell
Imhoff in 1968.
Pau Gasol則是自從湖人在1996年用Vlade Divac從夏洛特換來Kobe後最大的搶劫交易案。

Manu Ginobili.

The new-look Lakers now can mesh the triangle offense with some quick

The Lakers are one of the youngest top teams in the league, with just one
player over 30, in Derek Fisher. Gasol is just 27, Bynum 20, and Odom, who it
seems has been around for decades, is just 28.

That's the other aspect of the deal that floors you. The Lakers got better
and younger while almost every other trade since the Memphis Heist has been
for a win-now veteran who is on the wrong side of 30.

San Antonio picked up veteran big man Kurt Thomas. He can still play, but he

wear down, too, showing that the svelte centers take as much of a pounding as
the thick ones (Shaq).

Cavs added Ben Wallace, 33. The Celtics' rebuild-on-the-fly in the offseason
was impressive, but Ray Allen (32), Kevin Garnett (31) and Paul Pierce (30)
have 32 NBA seasons between them, which is a lot of mileage on their
sneakers.

seems like just last week that he was a 20-something young star.

With the IRL-Champ Car merger now official, this year's Long Beach Grand Prix
race looks like it will be the very last "Champ Car" race banner, making it
somewhat of a lame duck.


The IRL has a race in Japan the day before Long Beach, meaning the only teams
available will be those Champ Car clubs that still want to race their
now-defunct Panoz cars. With money at stake, you know someone will show up.
But last year's race had a measly 17 entries, and the field may be even
smaller this year.

Champ Car has certainly been "fluid" in the recent past, with teams not
naming drivers until the week of the race and some teams only running one car
instead of the usual two.

There are teams devoted to Long Beach - you know the Newman-Haas and Forsythe
teams will run - but it's going to be interesting to see exactly how many
teams commit.

This is in general a good thing for open-wheel racing, and a lot of great
names will return to Long Beach in 2009 under the IRL banner, But here's
hoping the race itself is compensated for its status in 2008.
