The Lakers' defense of their NBA title encompasses the usual 82 games over
nearly six months of play, beginning in L.A. and ending there.
Somewhere along the way, they'll even have to leave home.

Kobe Bryant and the returning champs begin the 2009-10 season, though, with 17
of their first 21 games at the Staples Center, including an opening-night

27 encounter with the Clippers on TNT doubles as the pro debut of No. 1 pick
Blake Griffin.
(Think the Clips' newest savior won't daydream a bit about his own Hollywood
moment during the Lakers' ring ceremony?)

The league made public the itineraries of its member squads Tuesday for a
season that begins on Oct. 27 and wraps up April 14. Every one of the 30 teams
plays a grueling 82-game schedule. Every schedule has its quirks. Such is the
equality of the NBA. No one gets any special treatment.

Those perusing the Lakers' march through mid-December might disagree.
But the champs make up for their early season cruise on the back end of their
schedule. Of their last 41 games, the Lakers venture out of SoCal 25 times.
(Not included in that total is a "road" game at the Clippers to finish out the
season.)

of ourselves.

Before anyone begins the time-honored tradition of going game-by-game to
predict a final record (it happens in every sport), let's take a look at some
of the more interesting aspects of the NBA's 64th season.

The national television schedule features 239 games on TNT, ESPN, ABC
and NBA TV. TNT kicks off its 53-game lineup with an opening night Eastern
Conference showdown of old faces in new places. Shaquille O'Neal joins LeBron
James as the Cavaliers host Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and
the newest Celtic, Rasheed Wallace.

the popular Fan Night every Tuesday beginning Nov. 3
Lakers-Clippers is also the start of ESPN Radio's 26-game package of national
coverage. Half of them are Sunday afternoon contests, with 12 matching up with
televised games on ABC.

and Cavs-Lakers. ESPN has another three games -- Heat-Knicks, Clippers-Suns
and Nuggets-Blazers.

three games until a six-gamer in late March.

The other Western Conference semifinalist better get cooking on the road early.

of six games in November and another seven in January. The Lakers and Clippers
both have eight-game trips starting Jan. 21, to make room for the Grammys
taking over Staples.
