Artest a big reason Lakers are champs
Mark Zaleski / The Press-Enterprise
"Ron Artest was our most valuable player tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson
said.
Because the simple truth is this: Ron Artest is a Laker. Ron Artest is a
champion. And as crazy it is to write -- the Lakers are champions largely
because of Ron Artest.
"Ron Artest was our most valuable player tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson
said.
Added Celtics coach Doc Rivers: "That three Artest made ... Artest was
unbelievable."
The 27-foot three-pointer Rivers referenced came with one minute left in the
game to put the Lakers up by six. It was an italicized and bolded exclamation
point on a night that could be described as a textbook childhood fantasy for
the first-year Laker.
By game's end, Artest had tallied 20 points and collected five steals. His 12
first-half points accounted for more than a third of the Lakers' scoring.
Posterity will remember LA's 30-point fourth quarter, Pau Gasol's late
offensive rebounding and Kobe Bryant providing juuuuust enough productivity
in an otherwise hideous performance. But those rings the Lakers receive next
fall will shine that much brighter because of Artest stabilizing them early
on.
While his teammates were as tight as a double knot, Ron Ron seemed one with
his chi.
While his teammates were forcing shots, Artest was simply a force.
At one point, he seemed like the only Laker who wasn't nervous. But honestly,
that might have been because he thought there would be a Game 8.
Artest is nothing if not ... out there. He did, after all, thank his
psychiatrist on television after the game. And if you need any proof why,
here's a sample of his postgame, locker-room reaction to his victory.
"I really couldn't feel where I was at. You know, I couldn't feel where I was
at. I couldn't feel the Final. I was more in the game and what the coach what
wanted me to do," said Artest, who was with his kids and kissed the Larry
O'Brien trophy when it was passed his way. "And when we won, I didn't know
we won. I honestly didn't know we won. I cried earlier before the game. How
stupid is that? How do you cry at 10 o'clock and then when you win you don't
cry. Dad, you raised a dumb child."
Reality show producers must be champing at the bit.
But it's long been his heart -- not his head -- that's fueled Artest.
When he almost blew a late-game lead in Game 5 in the conference finals vs.
Phoenix by hiking up an unnecessary shot with 22 seconds left on the shot
clock, Jackson kept him in the game because he always seems to find a way
to get to the ball.
He did. And scored the buzzer-beating, game-winning basket.
He shut down Kevin Durant in the first round against Oklahoma City. He hit
four three-pointers in a crucial Game 3 against Utah in the next series.
And after absorbing loads of criticism for Paul Pierce's breakout performance
in Game 5 in Boston, Artest responded with 15 points in Game 6 and a near
masterpiece in Game 7.
"I'm just so happy for Ron, the way he played tonight, the way he played in
Game 6, very productive, very aggressive, very confident," Gasol said. "He's
a huge part of our success. I'm just happy that he was able to win his first
championship, and you could see it in his face. He's like a little kid right
now that got his dream come true."
Artest will always be linked to that infamous incident in Detroit six years
ago, when he attacked a fan in the stands and was suspended for the year.
Thursday, he said he'd felt as though he let his old teammates in Indiana
down and "never thought God would put me in this position again."
Well, he did. And when it comes to a guy like Artest, there's really no one
who compares.
