The Lakers won with defense in 2009-10, so the two-time defending champions
added another player with a reputation as a strong defender when they
selected Devin Ebanks, a sophomore forward from West Virginia, with the 43rd
overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday.

They also selected forward Derrick Caracter of UTEP with the 58th pick.

Ebanks didn't have eye-popping numbers at West Virginia, to say the least. He
averaged 12 points on 45.7 percent shooting plus a team-leading 8.1 rebounds
in 35 games for the Mountaineers, who advanced to the Final Four for the
first time since 1951.

His game isn't unlike that of former Lakers forward Trevor Ariza when he left
UCLA, according to general manager Mitch Kupchak.

Ebanks might be a better offensive player than Ariza.
"Devin is probably more well-rounded," Kupchak said.

Ryan Blake, the NBA's director of scouting, told the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily
Mail earlier this week: "He's got a huge upside. You've got a guy who's
6-foot-9, but he's still developing. How long is it going to take him?

"You've got all the early entries, you've got international guys and you've
got seniors who are going to take over the first-round spots because they've
played really well and they don't need the same (amount of) time.

"It's really a matter of who needs that type of player and do they have the
time to develop him."

也許他是個比Ariza有著更好進攻手段的球員，
「Devin似乎更加的全面」，Kupchak表示。

而球探之王，還是球探的這位Ryan Blake，
則是向Charleston Daily Mail透露，
「他非常值得期待。一個六尺九而且還在長的傢伙，
  你覺得被選上要花多久？
  是有一些肯定會早早中選的啦，來自不同國家的球員，
  還有幾個必定會吃下第一輪順位的，
  打得好又適應得快的大四生。
  但像這種球員，被選上只不過是哪一隊需要他，
  還有養起來要花多少時間的問題而已。」

The Lakers certainly have the nucleus of another championship contender, with
Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Andrew Bynum and Lamar
Odom under contract for several seasons to come.
Ebanks would give the Lakers a third player from the New York borough of
Queens after Artest and Odom. He went to high school at St. Thomas More
School in suburban Oakdale, Conn. He initially signed with Indiana but gained
his release.

Kobe、Pau、Ron、Drew、LAmar都還有幾年的約，
而Ebanks將繼Ron跟Lamar之後成為同樣來自Queens的第三人。
他從Oakdale, Conn.郊區的St. Thomas More School畢業，
一開始跟Indiana簽約但又被放掉了。

"I'm about two minutes from Ron and about 10 from Lamar," Ebanks said. "I'm
happy because I'll get to play with the greatest player in the world right
now, Kobe. I'm a young player willing to learn. I have a whole bunch of stuff
to learn about the NBA."

Ebanks could fit into the slot that's expected to be vacated by Adam
Morrison, who's eligible to become a free agent at the end of the month.
Morrison made a little more than $5 million in the final season of his rookie
contract.

Morrison的菜鳥約最後一年讓他賺進了5m。

If he makes the team, Ebanks won't earn anywhere near that figure.
Second-round picks generally sign one-season deals for roughly $470,000, with
a bump to about $800,000 if a second year is added to the deal. Teams also
can pay more if they like.

"Both players will play in the summer league (next month in Las Vegas),"
Kupchak said. "If they perform well, they will be invited to training camp,
perhaps with a contract that provides some security. Then they'll have to
make the team in training camp."

如果Ebanks來湖人，那薪水可差得遠了。
第二輪選秀的約大概都在470k左右，
如果附加了第二季也頂多在800k上下，
當然球隊佛心來的也是可以多塞一把鈔票給他。
Kupchak認為，
「兩名新人都會打今年的夏季聯盟(在Vegas)，
  如果他們表現好，那他們就會加入訓練營，
  也許還會有一張生活無虞的漂亮約，
  然後就得在訓練營裡面正式加入球隊了。」
