They never will cordon off a section of the Hall of Fame for Theo Ratliff.
The only key to a city he might get would be to his hometown of Demopolis,
Ala., population 7,500.

也許他永遠沒辦法得到進入名人堂的機會，只有可能被選入自己家鄉的名人堂。

Still, it's been a pretty solid career for the defensive-minded center. He's
a three-time NBA leader in blocked shots. He was named an All-Star in 2001,
although he couldn't play due to injury.

這是一個以火鍋見長的中鋒，他曾經三次拿下聯盟火鍋王。也曾在01年被選入明星賽，
雖然他因傷沒打。

Soon, though, it might be over for the 16-year veteran who turns 38 in April.

"It could be my very last year of playing,'' the Lakers big man said in an
interview with FanHouse. "It's 16 years. I mean, it's been a long time. So I
just take it in stride day by day and enjoy the whole process every single
time I step out on the floor.''

段時間。現在我上場都盡量去享受比賽的過程。"Ratliff說。

Ratliff doesn't play a lot for the Lakers, averaging just 8.4 minutes. But he
had gotten into the team's first eight games before sitting out Thursday at
Denver due to tendinitis in his left knee.

他在湖人本季的前八場都有出賽，只有對Denver那場因為他左膝的不適沒有上場。
他本季在湖人出賽的時間不多，只有8.4分鐘。

Ratliff's time figures to decrease when center Andrew Bynum returns late this
month or in early December from offseason knee surgery. But Ratliff isn't too
worried about it.

在Bynum本月底或是12月初歸來後，Ratliff的出場時間會變的更少。但他本人表示
無所謂。

Ratliff only has played for one team that advanced past the second round of
the playoffs, his 2007-08 Detroit Pistons losing in the Eastern Conference
finals. Now, he's with the two-time defending champions who look to be in
pretty good shape to make it to a fourth straight NBA Finals.

在Ratliff的生涯裡他只有在07-08球季待在活塞的時候有突破過季後賽第二輪，但
球隊在東區冠軍賽輸掉了。現在他希望這個衛冕兩屆總冠軍的球隊能夠連續四年

"It's great,'' Ratliff said of being with the Lakers. "Great, great system.
Obviously, it's a championship twice team. It's a great atmosphere. Phil
(Jackson), the greatest coach in basketball. It's just a great feeling being
on a team that has such confidence, and knowing what it is that they're
trying to accomplish when they're out on the floor.''

談到待在湖人隊，Ratliff表示"這感覺很棒，這球隊運作的很好，不愧是衛冕冠軍的球

If you're scoring at home, that was five greats and one greatest uttered by
the 6-foot-10 Ratliff, who signed a one-year minimum deal last July.

Ratliff said it's too early to speculate whether he might definitely walk
away if he earns a ring with the Lakers. He will evaluate matters fully at
the end of the season.

Ratliff表示現在還太早去推測如果今年奪冠，那他是不是還選擇要退休這個問題了。

"Of course, that,'' Ratliff said of age being the primary reason he might
retire. "You always got to take injuries into account and just the process of
moving through the free agency again. You don't know if a team is going to
want you back. It's just a matter of if it's the right fit for me or if it's
the right situation on how I feel. The whole matter I'll discuss with my
family because they're in the process too.''

"做決定之前當然要先考量自己的身體狀況，當你投身到自由市場，也未必會有球隊對
你感興趣。我需要去跟我的家人討論哪樣比較適合我。"Ratliff說。

The end of the line looked to be a possibility when Ratliff barely played
during the first half of last season for San Antonio. But he was dealt to
Charlotte last February, and ended up averaging 5.1 points and 4.2 rebounds
over 22.3 minutes in 28 Bobcats games.

上一季Ratliff為馬刺出賽後決定要退休，但他在二月時卻和山貓達成了協議。最後
在幫山貓出場28場比賽裡，以平均22.3分鐘的時間繳出了5.1分以及4.2籃板的成績。

When Ratliff became a free agent last summer, he talked to his buddy, Lakers
guard Derek Fisher, a 15-year veteran. The two never have been teammates but
have worked together in the players union, with Fisher the president and
Ratliff a vice president.

當他在今夏變為自由球員，他曾經跟他那15年來從未當過隊友，只有當過同事的好兄弟
Fisher聊過。(Fisher是球員工會的主席，Ratliff是副主席。)

"Derek was letting me know that (the Lakers) were looking for older guys, and
I said, 'Can you put a word in for me?''' Ratliff said.

Ratliff說。

Fisher put on his assistant general manager hat. Not long after that, Ratliff
had a meeting with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak, and was signed.

"I just felt that we could use a good veteran big guy, particularly that
Andrew would be a little slow to begin.'' Fisher said. "It'd be good to have
a veteran big guy who really thinks defense first, thinks shot blocking and
he's just a great guy to have in our locker room. Not that I felt that my
comment or suggestion would be a deciding factor, but I thought he'd be a
good fit. I kind of mentioned it to a couple of people, and it kind of ended
up in (Kupchak's) office, and it worked out.''

"我只是覺得我們需要這個有經驗的老手，這樣Bynum說不定可以跟他學點東西。有這個

Ratliff is used for what Jackson calls a "short-minute role.'' He played a
season-high 17 minutes in the opener against Houston but since has been used
for game totals between four and 10 minutes.

Let's just say the Lakers don't need Ratliff, who has 13 rebounds and five
blocks in his 67 seasonal minutes, to score. He's taken just six shots,
making one, and has an anemic scoring average of 0.3.

If Ratliff plays enough after Bynum returns he could set a dubious NBA
record. Only four players in league history have appeared in 50 or more games
in a season and averaged less than one point, with the lowest being 0.7.

如果Bynum回來後Ratliff還能穩定出賽的話，他很有可能寫下一個NBA的紀錄。NBA
史上只有4名球員在出賽超過50場的比賽而平均得分是在1分以下的，最低的是0.7。

The lows men are Pistons center Eric Montross, at 0.8 in 1999-2000, Denver
forward Ryan Bowen, at 0.9 in 2003-04, Atlanta guard Mario West, who did it
with a 0.9 average in 2007-08 and with a 0.8 one in 2008-09, and forward
Dominic McGuire, who averaged the record 0.7 last season with Washington and
Sacramento.

那四名球員分別是Eric Montross，99-00球季在活塞而均分只有0.8。Ryan Bowen，03-04
球季在金塊，均分是0.9。Mario West，08-09在老鷹，均分是0.9。最後一個是Dominic

"It's not a big issue with me,'' Ratliff, who has career averages of 7.2
points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.44 blocks, said with a laugh when told he could
shatter that not-exactly-glorious mark. "I don't care nothing about stats. I
never have.''

當被告知他可能會創下這不光榮的紀錄後，Ratliff笑了以後表示"別鬧了，

That's one reason why Jackson likes Ratliff.

這是Phil喜歡他的其中一個原因。

"We wanted a veteran that knows how to play the game and support the guys in
front of him,'' Jackson said.

Jackson had James Edwards, 40, for big-man insurance during Chicago's 1995-96
title season; Robert Parish, 43, in the role for the Bulls' 1996-97
championship season; John Salley, 36, doing it for the Lakers' 1999-2000
title team; and Horace Grant, just shy of 39, on the 2003-04 Lakers outfit.
All were in their final NBA seasons.

當Phil還在公牛執教時，95-96那年的公牛奪冠，陣容裡就有40歲的James Edwards。
96-97也有36歲的John Salley，這位在99-00球季也有在湖人出賽。而Horace Grant
03-04在湖人時也是高齡39歲了。這都是他們在NBA的最後一季。

The Lakers might not have won the crown in Grant's finale. But Ratliff
perhaps still can take comfort in knowing Jackson often sends big men into
retirement with a ring.

雖然湖人沒有幫Grant奪冠，但Ratliff也許了解Phil總是盡力幫老人家達成心願了。
