after helping Lakers win two consecutive titles. Satisfied? Not him.

Mitch Kupchak went from Jerry West's right-hand man to architect of this
current Lakers' squad, which has won two consecutive NBA titles.
從當初Jerry West的得力助手到如今湖人隊的決策者，

There is a picture hanging on the wall of Lakers general manager Mitch
Kupchak's office in ElSegundo in which he is posing with his Washington
Bullets teammates at the White House.

The Bullets had just won the 1978 NBA title, the 23-year-old Kupchak playing
a pivotal role at power forward, and they gathered there to commemorate their
championship.

後來全隊在白宮前紀念他們的總冠軍。
As Kupchak inspects the photo, the innocence of it all jumps out at him.

"There's probably 10 people in this picture who shouldn't even be there,"
Kupchak said, laughing. "It was ridiculous. We had cars of people, no
security. People just walked into the room. That couldn't happen today."

And for proof, Kupchak points to another photo hanging on his wall.

In this one, Kupchak's architectural wonder - the 2009 NBA champion Lakers -
are posing with President Barack Obama at a similar White House ceremony.

"That was so scripted," Kupchak said. "There was security everywhere. Secret
Service running around everywhere you looked.

"Times sure have changed, huh?"

More than Kupchak could have possibly predicted way back in 1978.

Back then he was just a kid from the University of North Carolina by way of
Brentwood, Long Island, trying to make an NBA name for himself in the
nation's capital, his biggest worries staying on the good side of head coach
Dick Motta and keeping up with center Elvin Hayes.

But then came a fateful move to the Lakers in 1981 as a free agent - with
Magic Johnson pushing owner Jerry Buss to finalize the deal during a game of
pool at Buss' Los Angeles mansion - soon followed by a devastating knee
injury that led to a premature end to his playing days and a new career in
the Lakers' front office.

The move to Los Angeles, knee injury and subsequent 14 years working
alongside Jerry West have led him to this, a spacious office that oversees
the Lakers' practice facility and the role of chief engineer of their most
recent dynasty.

這一切都塑造了現在的Kupchak：新湖人王朝的核心推手，

In that job Kupchak has been the caretaker to West's final stroke of genius -
the 2000-02 three-peat era Lakers - the general manager who traded center
Shaquille O'Neal and the guy at whom Kobe Bryant took some nasty shots when
he was going through his trade-me-or-else ultimatum in the summer of 2007.

the pieces back together and lead the Lakers to greatness?

We got our answer within three years.

A masterful deal for Pau Gasol, the decision to hang on to Andrew Bynum, the
belief in Lamar Odom and the acquisitions of Trevor Ariza, Ron Artest and
Shannon Brown put the Lakers back on top again.
對Pau Gasol的瞞天過海，對Andrew Bynum的擇善固執，對Lamar Odom的充分信任，

In the blink of the eye - albeit an eternity in Los Angeles - Kupchak had the
Lakers in three consecutive NBA Finals, hoisting the championship trophy the
past two seasons and on the brink of perhaps another three-peat this season.

"It's why he's one of the most respected guys in the league," Washington
Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld said. "For a while here, the team was
down but he rebuilt it. He made a great trade to get Gasol, he drafted Bynum,
signed Artest. He's done a fantastic job here."

This year is no different. Kupchak improved the Lakers with the additions of
Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and re-signed Brown, all while the Miami Heat were
grabbing the headlines by adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Dwyane Wade.

If it's possible to advance a two-time defending champion, Kupchak did it.

"And he's done it quietly and efficiently, which is what Mitch is all about,"
West said.

In the process he's gone from West's right-hand man to nearly run out of town
by frustrated fans to the current toast of the city.
一路走來，從當初West的得力助手，到差點被全城球迷趕走，到如今受到全場的滿堂彩。
It's been a wild ride, to say the least, and as Kupchak sits back in his
office worrying about the next big problem - because even when you preside
over a dynasty that's what you do - he aches for a day he can just relax and
appreciate what he and the Lakers have accomplished.
這一路，Kupchak走的有夠瘋狂，如今他依然坐在辦公室繼續殫精竭慮。
統領一個王朝是他的工作。
他也希望某一天他能停歇下來，細細品味他和湖人們經歷的所有輝煌與成就，
But he knows that is a day better suited for retirement.
不過，Kupchak很清楚，真的到了那一天，他也退休了。
"If you're in the Finals - and we've been fortunate enough to be there the
last three years - you should be happy but you never are," Kupchak said.
"It's more of a feeling of `Whew, we did what we were supposed to. But how do
we do it again?'
"如果能一路挺進到總冠軍賽—過去三年我們有幸做到了—或許就該感到高興。
可是我們從來不會這樣思考。" Kupchak說。
"反而是想著：哎唷，達到想要達成的目標了，那麼，該如何繼續下去呢？"
"Because when you get this far, you just want to get that much further."

So he plots, wonders, worries and prepares for tomorrow, next week, next year
and five years down the road.
於是為了明天、明年、未來五年，他謀劃，發想，擔憂，準備—這些都不曾停止過。
"My concern is the next four days," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "His is
the next four years."
"我只須擔心未來4天，"湖人Phil Jackson說，"而他擔心的是未來4年。"
By then, presumably, Bryant will be at the end of his career, Jackson will be
relaxing in his cabin in Montana and the Lakers will face another crossroads.

"I'm not so na ve to think that in four years we won't have to go through
another rebuilding period," Kupchak said. "And guess what? There will be

When they get there, Kupchak no longer will be the untested former apprentice
he was in 2004 when he faced the summer of Lakers' uncertainty - O'Neal's
pending trade, Jackson's retirement and Bryant toying with the idea of moving
on to the Clippers as a free agent.
2004年的夏天，他新官上任，卻面臨重重考驗—
O'Neal懸而未決的交易，Jackson的退休計畫，
還有Bryant兒戲般的想要以自由球員身分加入快艇。

"That was a stressful time," Kupchak admitted.

But he got through it and the Lakers came out the other end just as strong as
before. Kupchak climbed out of West's shadows as his own man, creating his
own legacy.

"He's like a brother to me," West said. "So I couldn't be happier for his
success."

West had observed Kupchak as a player for the Lakers in the mid-1980s and
watched as he meticulously rehabbed from a devastating knee injury to give
the Lakers a hand in their 1985 Finals win over the Boston Celtics. He
finally talked him into working with him in the front office after the 1986
season.
West看著Kupchak。一路從1980年他加盟湖人，到他遭受重大膝傷並頑強的恢復，

"I've always lived my life on instincts, and I knew what kind of a person he
was," West said. "I watched how hard and diligent he worked and I recognized
the strengths of his that I didn't even have. I just felt he had a chance to
be special."

Kupchak took over from West after the 2000 season, but the pieces already
were in place for the Lakers to win two more titles.

"It would have been hard to mess that up," Kupchak said.

But the years under West had him fully prepared when the Lakers faced
tremendous turmoil in the mid-2000s, and their resurgence later that decade.

"Those 14 years for me - I mean, who gets to work with Jerry West like that?"
Kupchak said.

When it came time to move O'Neal, with whom the Lakers couldn't agree on an
extension, Kupchak didn't hesitate. He sent him to Miami for Odom, Caron
Butler, Brian Grant and a first-round pick.
當球隊不願意延長肥約而打算交易O'Neal時，他表現出了應有的果斷—
從熱火那裡換來了Odom、Caron Butler、Brian Grant以及第一輪選秀權。
It helped that he had the support of ownership - a circle that included Jerry
Buss, his daughter Jeanie and son Jimmy.

"We all had each other's back," Kupchak said. "It would have been different
had someone said, `Well, I'm not sure about this, but if you really want to
do it, Mitch ' Because then it can get real dicey."

Three years later Kupchak navigated the Lakers through another storm, this
time when Bryant's frustration boiled over after the team struggled to
rebound following the O'Neal trade.

在當下，O'Neal交易後，湖人狀態低迷不振，Kobe對此咆哮，感到沮喪。
In the summer of 2007, Bryant told anybody and everybody he wanted out of Los
Angeles and vowed to never play for the Lakers again.
2007夏天，他表示他想要離開洛杉磯，還宣稱不想再效力於湖人隊。
On one hand, Kupchak understood Bryant's frustrations.
一方面，Kupchak瞭解Kobe的受挫感。
"He had given us three years after we signed him, and he saw his window
beginning to close a little bit," Kupchak said. "He wanted to end his career
winning championships and he couldn't see that in L.A."
"自我們簽下他後那三年，他為我們帶來了很多，但所有的跡象都顯示湖人每況愈下。"
Kupchak說，

On the other, he wished Bryant would have just come to him first.

"From my vantage point I would have wished he kept it quiet," Kupchak said.
"Come on in, yell at me, tell me what you think but let's not create a
firestorm."

Kupchak fielded calls from around the league, but nothing remotely close to
the value of a 27-year-old talent like Bryant came across his desk.

So he held on to him, and the next season Bynum began improving, Odom's game
elevated and the Lakers started winning big. That also was the season Ariza
and Gasol came aboard and the Lakers reached the Finals, where they lost to
Boston in six games.
於是他堅持留住Kobe，新的賽季，Bynum進步顯著，Odom表現穩定。
此時湖人開啟另一個大轉變，那個賽季換來了Ariza和Gasol，
於是湖人一路打到總冠軍賽，最後在G6敗給塞爾提克。.
They returned to the Finals the next two seasons, beating Orlando and then
taking the Celtics out in seven games last season.
接下來的兩個賽季，湖人連續上演頂尖對決，第一年擊敗了魔術，
今年也終於在G7淘汰塞爾提克，拿下那座歐布萊恩盃。.
Bryant made some amends.
Bryant也為之前的言行做出了賠罪。
"Kobe and I have had a couple conversations that were really good," Kupchak
said. "Stuff like, `Whew, am I glad you didn't trade me."'
"我和Kobe之間的那幾次交談還不賴，"Kupchak說，
"比如說：嘿，真高興你沒把我換出去哪。"
It was a nice gesture and Kupchak appreciated it. But just like the
championships, it was fleeting.
那是很友善的表示，Kupchak也非常感激這些，不過即使是總冠軍，也只是過眼雲煙。
Soon he was back to planning, plotting and worrying.
很快的，他又回到之前的狀態，未雨綢繆，殫精竭慮。
It's in his blood.

"It's just a general manager's nature to worry and try and anticipate what
can go wrong," Kupchak said. "That never goes away."
