energetic defense needed to win another championship -- came from an
unexpected source.

Then again, Jerry West has been known to expect the worst. When the legendary
Lakers player became their general manager, he routinely used to skip his
team's epic NBA Finals battles in the 1980s with Boston, admitting it was too
hard for him to watch. That's the pessimist in him.

When it comes to the Lakers, apparently he's still picking out the darkest
cloud in the sky.

Addressing the Lakers' occasional defensive lapses, he reportedly told a
gathering of automobile dealers in Orange County last week that sometimes the
reason "you can't play defense is because you can't."
據報導他在上週，一場位於Orange County所舉辦的車商聚會中，針對Lakers偶爾的防守
失誤這麼說，「有時你不是做不好防守，而是你做不來。」
He described some of the Lakers as "long in the tooth" and said he didn't
expect them to be competitive "much longer."

Tuesday night, in their first game since West's words found their way into
the mainstream media, the Lakers politely disagreed, hammering Utah, 120- 91.

The three oldest starters -- Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest -- had
four steals in the first quarter as the Lakers ran out to a 37-22 lead.

It might also be noted that in the week before West declared the Lakers too
gray to stay with the young 'uns, they went into Oklahoma City and outlasted
the kiddie corps Thunder. Then they traveled to Mile High Denver where they
somehow wheezed, coughed and hobbled their way to another victory over the
Nuggets.

The reason the Lakers sometimes don't play defense very well isn't because
they can't. It's because sometimes they just don't feel like it.

Utah coach Jerry Sloan said the Lakers "are tough to get inside shots on."
Utah的教頭Jerry Sloan形容Lakers的防守幾乎沒有內線的空檔。
He also described them as "a terrific defensive team. They have been for
three years. They have guys that get up and guard you."

It would seem so, considering the Lakers are third in the NBA in opponents'
shooting percentage.

Said Bryant: "We've been pretty good defensively all year. It's not new."
我們整年度的防守都在水準之上，這已不是什麼新聞了。Bryant表示。
Asked about West's comments, he said, "That didn't bother us. We just kept
doing what we do -- we're a top-three defense."
被問到有關West的評論，他說''那不會困擾我們。我們只要持續保持下去--我們可是聯
盟防守前三名的球隊呀。''
Anyway, Tuesday's game was never close. As well as the Lakers played, Utah
also took bad shots, lost track of their men on defense and were sloppy with
the ball.
總之，星期二的比賽從未僵持過。相較於Lakers表現的如此出色，Utah總是濫投、跟丟人
而且打的懶散。
