Lamar Odom requested the Lakers to trade him Friday, which was a driving
force to them moving him in the deal to the Dallas Mavericks for a
first-round pick, trade exception and other considerations in a deal not yet
finalized.

The Lakers didn’t want a disgruntled Odom at his $8.9 million salary and
believe they can acquire a new third big man to play behind Andrew Bynum and
Pau Gasol. That is the challenge for Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss on the
front-burner, while still simmering is their desire to have Dwight Howard
from Orlando.

Why not hold on to Odom as a trade chip, particularly in ongoing pursuit of
Chris Paul? The Hornets didn’t want Odom that badly either, and the Lakers
were not unhappy to get some assets and financial savings from Dallas by
parting with Odom, 32, despite him being projected to play 30-plus minutes
per game this season for the Lakers.

It follows that teams most interested in Odom would be ones looking to win
now — like the Mavericks … and the Lakers. So the deal, while saving Jerry
Buss $18 million (counting luxury tax) for the moment, doesn’t appear to
give the Lakers a better chance at winning the championship this year —
hence Kobe Bryant’s anger Sunday at Odom to the Mavs: “We were supposed to
get them back. Do I think we got too little? Who did we get? I don’t think
Mark Cuban is protesting this trade.”

"I don't like it. To be honest with you, I don't like it. I've known Lamar
for a long time and for the team itself, he's meant a lot. From a team
chemistry standpoint, he was great at bringing guys together and things of
that nature. I trust that management knows what they're doing. I'll let them
do their jobs. I won't get in the way of it.

don't get where that comes from. Now, I'm getting pissed off. Especially
(trading Odom) to them (Dallas). We were supposed to get them back. Do I
think we got too little? Who did we get? I don't think Mark Cuban is
protesting this trade.

"You've got to let Mitch (Kupchak) do his job (as the Lakers' general
manager). Mitch has proven himself over the course of the years that he's
been able to build a great team here. We all have to trust that he's going to
do that. That being said, it's still hard to see one of my friends and one of
our great players go somewhere, especially to that team seemingly for
nothing. Now whether they have something else going on, that's on them. But
it's tough. It's tough. I talked to (Odom) a little bit two nights ago. I
haven't spoken to him since this latest news, but I will.
當然要讓Mitch做他的工作，過去這幾年他也證明了他有能力建立一個好隊伍。我們都
該相信他能做到這點。不過說是這樣說，看到我的朋友和隊中最好的球員之一離開，
尤其是去
那個隊伍，又幾乎什麼都沒換得，這實在太痛苦了。不管高層是否還在爭取
其他交易機會，這筆交易都令人傷心。
兩天前我和Lamar談過了，至今沒有再聊到事情進展，但我會再找他的。
"It's tough to lose Lamar. Pau (Gasol) is still here and we're thankful for
that. It's hard when you've been through so many battles to see them go
someplace else. It's tough. It's tough. It's the nature of the business and
we all understand that. At the same time it still hard."
很難過看到Lamar走，但Gasol還在這就夠感恩了。戰友離開實在太難過了。
這是這筆生意的法則，大家都能理解，但不改變這份傷感。

In addition to the draft pick, the Lakers received a traded-player exception
worth Odom's salary this season, $8.9 million. Trade exceptions are difficult
to explain, but the Lakers can obtain a player from another team by trading
only a draft pick if the player makes less than $9 million. Teams have
exactly one year to use a traded-player exception.
The Lakers could try to package the traded-player exception to get a better
player than Odom, but Bryant wasn't anticipating it.
"I'm not thinking that at all," he said.
