The most common ways of saying these words are:
[進步]: getting better
Eg.“My English grammar is getting better.”
Eg.“My English grammar has gotten lots better than it was.”
“progressing” and “improving” are still used sometimes in spoken English.
[退步]:
1. getting worse
Eg.“Ever since I moved out of home, my Taiwanese has been steadily getting
worse.”
2. going downhill
Eg.“Everybody’s math goes downhill after they graduate.”
3. getting rusty: “rusty” (生疏，生鏽) is a great word to use when talking
about a language (or a skill) you have not used for a while.
Eg.“I haven’t spoken English for a few months. It’s pretty rusty.”
Eg.“I haven’t shot hoops for a while. My three-point shots are getting rusty.”
Eg.“My car’s been out in the rain for the last six years. There are patches
of rust on the side.”
