Korean Starts As Favourite
Top seeds in the Men’s and Women’s Singles events at the TMS Chinese
Taipei Open are the host country’s CHUAN Chih-Yuan and Singapore’s LI Jia
Wei. The latter may well start as slight favourite in the Women’s Singles
event having been the runner up at the Volkswagen Open Korea last week.
However, in the Men’s Singles it is second seed, OH Sang Eun, who starts as
the favourite.

OH Sang Eun who starts as favourite in the Men's Singles in Chinese Taipei
The Korean has been in excellent form in recent weeks, whilst CHUAN Chih-Yuan
has suffered some rather unexpected defeats.
因為南韓選手最近表現很好，莊智淵卻有點虛。
OH Sang Eun clinched the bronze medal in the Men’s Singles event at the
Volkswagen 48th World Championships in Shanghai in May 2005 beating the
reigning European champion, Vladimir SAMSONOV and former European champion
Peter KARLSSON, en route to his semi-final contest with the eventual gold
medallist, WANG Liqin. Furthermore, last week at the Volkswagen Open Korea he
won the Men’s Singles title in impressive style defeating his compatriot and
reigning Olympic champion RYU Seung Min in the semi-finals before proving too
experienced for surprise finalist, LIM Jae Hyun.

Meanwhile, at both the Volkswagen 48th World Championships and the Volkswagen
Open Korea CHUAN Chih-Yuan suffered second round defeats; in the former he
lost to the Japanese teenager Jun MIZUTANI whilst last week the host country’
s twenty-year old LIM Jae Hyun ended his progress.

Second Round
Seeded number three in the Men’s Singles is CHEN Weixing of Austria whilst
the fourth seed is Chinese Taipei’s CHIANG Peng-Lung and both players face
potentially very testing second round matches.
男單第三種子陳衛星，第四種子蔣澎龍在第二輪都可能遇到伏襲。
CHEN Weixing may well meet Korea’s LEE Chul Seung, nowadays he is
concentrating his efforts more on coaching but he is a devastating attacking
player and CHEN Weixing’s defensive style of play might just be to his
liking. Meanwhile, CHIANG Peng-Lung also faces a Korean, LEE Jung Woo, a
young man who is establishing himself in the national team and in the past
year has proved a most dangerous player with his penhold grip attacking play.

Tough Hurdles
In the Women’s Singles, the major threat to LI Jia Wei comes from Hong Kong;
should the seeding go to plan LI Jia Wei will face a trio of Hong Kong
players if she is to clinch the title. In the quarter-finals the scheduled
opponent is SONG Ah Sim, in the semis LAU Sui Fei and then second seed TIE
Yana. However, all four players have tough hurdles to overcome if they are to
reach their allotted places in the draw.
女單方面，李佳薇的主要威脅來自香港，包括八強可能遇到桑亞蟬、四強柳絮飛以及決賽
帖亞娜。
LI Jia Wei is scheduled to meet Japan’s Sayaka HIRANO in round two, a player
who impressed at the Volkswagen 48th World Championships in Shanghai whilst
the host association’s HUANG I-Hwa awaits SONG Ah Sim in round two.
Meanwhile, Singapore’s ZHANG Xueling is the scheduled second round opponent
for LAU Sui Fei whilst in the lower half of the draw TIE Yana could well face
Korea’s MOON Hyun Jung in the quarters and a very difficult opponent in the
semis, GAO Jun of the USA. She reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s
Singles event one month ago in Shanghai.
李佳薇會在第二輪先遇到個日本選手，桑亞蟬則會在第二輪遇到黃怡樺。另外，新加坡的
張雪林是柳絮飛第二輪的可能對手，帖亞娜則可能在八強遇到文炫晶，四強遇高軍。

Hong Kong Pairs Top Seeds
In both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles events, Hong Kong partnerships occupy
the top seeded places. In the Men’s Doubles KO Lai Chak and LI Ching, the
2004 Olympic Games silver medallists are the top seeds, whilst in the Women’
s Doubles, TIE Yana and ZHANG Rui are the second seeds. The latter pair, like
their male counterparts, made the perfect start to the ITTF Pro Tour in 2004
by winning gold at the first two ITTF Pro Tour tournaments of 2005; the
Liebherr Slovenian Open and the Liebherr Croatian Open.
Seeded number two in the Men’s Doubles is the Austrian pairing of CHEN
Weixing and Robert GARDOS. They face a potentially difficult semi-final
contest against Japan’s Seiya KISHIKAWA and Ryusuke SAKAMOTO whilst in the
Women’s Doubles the second seeds, Hong Kong’s LAU Sui Fei and SONG Ah Sim,
are scheduled to meet the winners of last week’s Volkswagen Open Korea,
Singapore’s TAN Paey Fern and ZHANG Xueling in the second round.
Play commences on Thursday 16th June 2005 in the Taipei Gymnasium with the
qualification stages in both the Men’s and Women’s Singles events.
