few things need to check

1.re-check the about:plugins page. is there any changes when you
linked those .so files
2.if nothing changes. I recommand you uninstall this firefox. or
abandon it, don't use it any more..... I bet this is the system
default firefox and it come with ubuntu together. so I don't know
where its location.
3.download a lastest linux build to you ubuntu.at
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
 (tar.bz2).  should be 3.0.6

4.them copy the tar.bz2 file to /usr/local/ or some where you like.
unrar the tar.bz2 by using "tar -jxvf [filename]"
5.you will see a folder named firefox
6.make a launcher or type ./firefox in firefox folder. and make sure
you are not using the root. or sudo.
7.Link those .so file again to the new firefox.
8.check about:plugins page

about java
links in java.com may be broken
you can go to sun's page for download

and pick up the bin file not the RPM file. RPM file is for me. Redhat
type linux. yours are ubuntu :D
