Reds move in for Luque

Deportivo La Coruna have confirmed that Liverpool have made an approach for
striker Albert Luque, but have warned The Reds that they will have to up the
ante if they are to land the Spain international.

Despite winning the UEFA Champions League in his first season at the helm, Rafa
Benitez is determined to revamp his Liverpool squad in the summer.

A host of players have been informed they can move on from Anfield and the
Spanish tactician has already set his sights on replacements - with Luque
appearing to be high on the list.

The 27-year-old had another productive season in La Liga, despite Depor
underperforming, and said recently that he was content at La Riazor.

A host of clubs are believed to be tracking Luque and Depor president Augusto
Cesar Lendoiro has confirmed that The Reds have lodged an opening gambit.

"We refused the first offer from Liverpool because it was insufficient,"
Lendoiro is quoted as saying in the Daily Star. "But we are still open to
negotiations." 

Luque would appear to have been made aware of the interest from Liverpool and
has admitted he would be prepared to join the Spanish revolution at Anfield.

"I have a contract until 2010 and the negotiations are up to Deportivo, but
there are a lot of clubs interested in me," said Luque.

"Barcelona are the champions of La Liga, but Liverpool are the champions of
Europe.

"At Liverpool I have friends like Luis Garcia and goalkeeper Jose Reina, who
will arrive soon.

"I want a quick decision so I can go on holiday knowing where I will be playing
next season.

"English football is excellent and I have no doubt that I could play in The
Premiership.

"I am a striker and The Premiership is the best place for the attack."
