Philipp Degen limped off after scoring as Liverpool Reserves drew 2-2 with
Manchester United on Thursday night.

The Swiss international netted just four minutes into his comeback but didn't
last the half.

Gary Ablett's side then had to come from behind through Daniel Pacheco to
earn a point from an entertaining game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in
Warrington.

Liverpool can take heart from the fact Ole Gunnar Solksejar named a strong XI
including Tomasz Kuszczak and Daniel Welbeck, who started the Carling Cup
final. There was another familiar face at full-back in Fabio Da Silva - twin
brother of the impressive Rafael.

It all started so well for Degen, who scored his first goal in English
football before either side had settled. It came after a hoof from Mikel San
Jose which Kuszczak and Robert Brady looked to have covered. Both failed to
take responsibility, allowing the defender to rob the ball and roll into an
empty net.

There was another shaky moment for the visitors minutes later when Pacheco
was almost gifted a second, prompting Fabio to bawl at his goalkeeper.
So far, so good - but events were about to take a downward turn.
First, with 20 minutes on the clock, an equaliser. It came when Welbeck
latched onto a superb throughball before lobbing Dean Bouzanis. Impressive
stuff.
Celebratory cheers from the United fans soon faded into groans of frustration
from the Liverpool ranks as, just 24 minutes into his return, Degen hobbled
towards the bench to be replaced by Ryan Crowther.

United were pressing for a second, and it took a far post clearance from
Emmanuel Mendy to thwart them. It finally did arrive on 36 minutes when Lee
Martin sent Fabio one-on-one with Bouzanis. The Brazilian showed the kind of
composure that could see him join his brother in United's senior ranks.
Things were about to get even worse for Ablett as half-time loomed when
Brazilian starlet Victor Flora followed Degen into the treatment room. He was
replaced by Jay Spearing, named among the substitutes after an endearing
cameo against Real Madrid.
The Wirral-born midfielder took centre stage in a Liverpool revival after the
restart, though it was Vincent Weijl who supplied the pass for Pacheco to
tuck beyond the reach of Kuszczak to level on 49 minutes.
Spearing displayed all his talents as the Reds searched for a winner, first
when he picked out Weijl in the box, then with a beautiful ball to Crowther
down the right. Sadly both moves broke down after the 20-year-old played his
part.
United were threatening less but Martin Kelly and San Jose had to be smart to
stop Martin after Welbeck bypassed the Reds midfield with an overhead pass.
Pacheco showed nice feet to create a scoring opportunity for Palsson down the
other end but again the chance went begging.
Captain for the night Kelly decided to take matters into his own hands,
charging 60 yards down field a la Alan Hansen only to have his shot blocked.
Pacheco came close from a dead ball 25 yards from goal but United saw the
game out.
