Liverpool's new stadium could be named Carlsberg Anfield as the Reds'
American owners desperately try to balance the books.
Carlsberg have enjoyed sponsorship of Liverpool for a record 18 years but
appear ready to suggest a new agreement which would see their name emblazoned
across the stadium.
"That will be part of the discussion, I'm sure, but there have been no
decisions yet," Gareth Roberts, Carlsberg UK's director of sponsorship, told
The Independent.
Arsenal sold the naming rights to their stadium to Emirates for ?00m over 13
years - including an eight-year shirt sponsorship deal - and those kind of
figures are likely to persuade Tom Hicks and George Gillett to risk a fan
backlash.
The pair are currently trying to negotiate the rescheduling of ?50m of loans
they took to buy Liverpool, and Carlsberg will be watching closely before
deciding whether to increase their sponsorship deal.
"We would be very interested in what happens. I'm sure that the conversations
that go on between the two parties will reflect that," Roberts said.
