Twins slugger hoped dimensions would change in new project
The Minnesota Twins finished with an American League-best 53-28 home record
during their 2010 AL Central championship season.
Even with that overall success taken into consideration, and ultimately the
main focus for any player on the team, Twins first baseman Justin Morneau
expressed disappointment in the team failing to move the outfield fences in
at Target Field to create a more beneficial hitting situation.
This comment from the perennial Most Valuable Player candidate came after the
Twins announced $4 million to $6 million in Target Field improvements, but
didn't adjust the concerns about the fences.
"Right-center to left-center is ridiculous," Morneau said in an e-mail to the
Minneapolis Star Tribune. "[It's] almost impossible for a right-handed hitter
to [homer to the] opposite field, and very difficult for lefties.
"It affects the hitters a lot, and you start to develop bad habits as a
hitter when you feel like you can only pull the ball to hit it over the
fence. You take those habits on the road."
Fifty-two home runs were hit by the Twins at Target Field, while 90 were hit
away from home. Minnesota pitchers gave up 64 home runs at home and 91 on the
road.
Twins president Dave St. Peter addressed Morneau's concerns about the fences.
"We had a lot of discussions in the clubhouse with the manager and general
manager," St. Peter said. "But right now, there is no plan to alter the
dimensions."
