Toronto acquires pair in exchange for Wells.

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays on Friday traded center fielder Vernon Wells to the Angels for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera.

Wells, who hit .273 with 31 home runs and 88 RBIs in 2010, is owed a total of $86 million over the next four seasons. He can opt out at the end of the 2011 campaign but isn't expected to exercise that option because of the large sum of money remaining on his current deal.

Wells has spent his entire 12-year career with the Blue Jays. He is the franchise leader in at-bats (5,470) and ranks second in home runs (223) and RBIs (813). The native of Texas has hit 30 or more home runs three times and 20 or more seven times and has driven in at least 100 runs three times during his tenure in Toronto.

The 32-year-old struggled to live up to the lofty expectations that came after signing a seven-year, $126 million contract extension in 2006. Just last week he made headlines when he told reporters: "I would totally agree I'm not worth that contract." A variety of injuries hampered his production but he often was able to play through the pain and averaged 143 games a season over the past four years.

The Angels reportedly became interested in Wells after the club was unable to secure the services of free agents Carl Crawford and Adrian Beltre.

It is likely that Rajai Davis will become the Blue Jays' new starting center fielder. The Connecticut native hit .284 with five home runs and 52 RBIs in Oakland last season. He won't be able to replace Wells' power numbers but he does provide the Blue Jays with an element of speed they haven't had in recent years. Davis has stolen 91 bases over the past two seasons while being caught just 23 times.

The 29-year-old Napoli hit .238 with 26 home runs and 68 RBIs with Los Angeles last season. He finished with a career-high 137 strikeouts but recorded 51 extra-base hits. He is eligible for arbitration this year and won't become a free agent until the end of the 2012 season. Napoli is asking for $6.1 million in arbitration, though the Angels countered with an offer for $5.3 million.

Napoli has spent his entire five-year career with the Angels, hitting .251 with 92 home runs and 249 RBIs.

Most of Napoli's experience comes behind the plate but he also appeared in 70 games at first base last season. His role on the Blue Jays likely will be spent backing up first baseman Adam Lind and catcher J.P. Arencibia while also receiving some time at DH. It's the same kind of role Toronto offered Russell Martin before he signed with the Yankees earlier in the offseason.

What the trade means for backup catcher Jose Molina is not yet clear. Molina is signed to a one-year contract worth $1.2 million and was expected to be Arencibia's primary backup. It's possible that the club could carry three catchers on the roster next season, though the Jays could instead cut ties with Molina.

Rivera is set to make $5.25 million in the final season of a three-year, $12.75 million contract. The 32-year-old hit .252 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs in 2010. He has the ability to play all three outfield positions, but he has spent the majority of his career at the corner outfield spots.

Rivera's role ultimately will be depend on whether the Blue Jays start Jose Bautista in right field or at third base. If Bautista starts in right then Rivera likely becomes the team's fourth outfielder but could get a chance to start if the Toronto slugger starts in the infield.

The Venezuela native has played for the Yankees, Expos and Angels during his 10-year career, hitting .280 with 112 home runs and 418 RBIs.
