Mets release second baseman Luis Castillo http://tinyurl.com/4s8cyym PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Luis Castillo has been released today by the Mets, who still owe the second baseman $6 million for the final season of a four-year contract. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is expected to meet with reporters shortly to discuss the team's decision and the direction the competition for the second base job will turn. Castillo entered spring training as the most expensive and experienced of the five candidates to man second base for the Mets. However, he was not able to plant himself firmly in the position as he jockeyed with Brad Emaus, Daniel Murphy, Justin Turner and, most recently, Luis Hernandez, for the starting job.
