Blue Jays respond to stealing-signs allegations

TORONTO -- Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said there is "zero
truth" to the allegations that his club is stealing signs.
Toronto was accused of stealing signs in a report released by ESPN The
Magazine on Wednesday. Anonymous players from an unnamed team, according to
the article, said the Blue Jays used a man dressed in white to relay signs
from the center-field seats.
"This whole thing is stupid," Anthopoulos said during an afternoon news
conference. "It's unbelievable that we're even sitting here to talk about
this.
"I just wish people would look at the common-sense component first and say,
'Is this really realistic?' Think about what would have to go into this kind
of stuff."
Stealing signs have been part of baseball for more than a hundred years. It
has become commonplace in the game for baserunners on second base to try to
relay signals regarding pitch selection and location to their teammates at
the plate.
When the signs are being stolen by sources off the field, though, it crosses
the line into blatant cheating. Anthopoulos said if the Blue Jays were
actually engaging in those types of illegal activities, it would be
impossible to keep secret.
The GM's biggest problem with the article is that it focused on four pitchers
from an unnamed team. There weren't any comments from former Blue Jays
players or personnel, which Anthopoulous said wouldn't be hard to get if
Toronto actually were doing something wrong.
"Baseball is a small family," Anthopoulos said. "It's a small fraternity, I
don't think it's too hard to find a former coach, a former player, a former
front-office executive, a former clubhouse guy, a former field guy.
"Not one person. Instead, let's find four players on another team claiming
they saw a guy in a white shirt, they saw a UFO flying across the sky. Let's
write a huge story and make a big stink of it."
The ESPN article detailed how Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista got into a
verbal altercation with a member of an opposing team's bullpen during an
incident that allegedly took place in April 2010.
"We know what you're doing," the reliever said, referring to the man in
white, according to ESPN. The reliever then said if they did it again, he'd
throw at their heads.
Bautista confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the incident took place last
season during a series against the White Sox.
The Dominican Republic native declined to name which pitcher he exchanged
words with because he didn't know whether that person played a role in the
article being published.
"I don't know," Bautista said when asked if he thought that reliever was
involved. "If I did, then I would bring his name up, but I don't. Unlike that
reporter, I'm not going to go to great lengths and bring people up if I don't
know if they're involved. I can't say I know he was involved, because I
don't."
The cheating accusations were the main topic of conversation prior to the
Blue Jays' game vs. Oakland on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
All of the televisions in the Toronto clubhouse were tuned to the news, and
players took to Twitter to voice their disgust.
Catcher J.P. Arencibia was one of the most vocal Blue Jays and said he took
it as a personal insult that type of report was released.
"Anyone who is a baseball player, that ever played baseball, knows that it's
impossible to do what they're saying we can do," Arencibia said. "I'm hitting
.200, if I knew what signs were coming you think we wouldn't be completely
dominating everybody that comes to this field?
"I think it's a joke. I know that it's unprofessional. I just don't agree
with it because I work my butt off, and to have someone discredit our success
that we have on the field because of someone that gives us signs is
unbelieveable."
White Sox players declined comment on the accusations, but manager Ozzie
Guillen did address the situation during an afternoon media scrum with
reporters.
"I'd be surprised," Guillen said when asked whether he'd be disappointed if
one of his players was the anonymous source.
"As long as you don't see it and not 100 percent sure, you can't be accusing
people for that. I don't think so. You have to be 100 percent sure to say,
'Listen, this thing is happening here.' Because when you assume something
happens, then you're not sure what's going on."
The 2010 series might have been the first incident Bautista had with Chicago,
but it wasn't his last. Earlier this season, left-hander Jon Danks took
offense when Bautista reacted angrily to an infield popup.
Bautista slammed his bat into the turf in frustration over the out. Danks
took that as Bautista trying to show him up on the mound and the two players
exchanged words on the field.
Bad blood between the two clubs appears to have been brewing for some time.
"I just know that they've chirped and had some things to say about us and
they're pretty convinced that we have signs," Arencibia said. "Looked like we
had [Justin] Verlander's signs when he threw a no-hitter against us.
"Looks like we had Rich Harden's signs yesterday. It looked like we knew
everything he was throwing. For people like that, for us, we just laugh about
it. If they want to think we're having the signs or whatever that's fine. But
anyone who knows, knows that we don't have the signs."
For those who still have doubts about whether Toronto was involved in
anything illegal, Anthopoulos had a few final words of advice.
"I think every one of our games is broadcast," Anthopoulos said. "There are
cameras everywhere. Why doesn't everybody go through the footage, spend a
month, spend a year, spend your lifetime. Go look for the man in the white
shirt.
"Maybe you'll find someone in a blue shirt or a black shirt. Maybe you're
going to see a dog, but spend the time, do a little work."
