The Rockies are expected to announce a restructuring of responsibilities in
their front office Wednesday, with general manager Dan O'Dowd staying in his
position but focusing more on the minor leagues and player development while
assistant general manager Bill Geivett is given expanded day-to-day duties
with the major-league club.
According to two sources with direct knowledge of the situation, O'Dowd
remains the general manager but will receive more assistance on the
major-league side from Geivett, who will work closely with manager Jim Tracy.
O'Dowd will still oversee the entire baseball operations, and remain involved
in player acquisitions. Geivett will still answer to O'Dowd as his boss.
O'Dowd has been the Rockies' GM since September 1999. The club has gone to
the playoffs twice during his tenure, including a World Series berth in 2007
but is on pace to have the worst season in franchise history.
O'Dowd has been on the road of late watching the Rockies' minor-league teams
and becoming more engaged in that process. He has a strong background in
player development dating to his days as the farm director for the Cleveland
Indians.
Geivett has been the Rockies' assistant GM since 2000 and was named senior
vice president of scouting and development in January 2011.
