Yankees attempt to lure Derrek Lee, Chipper Jones out of retirement

In desperate need of power, the New York Yankees are trying to lure Chipper
Jones and Derrek Lee out of retirement as a temporary replacement for Mark
Teixeira.
"If Chipper Jones wants to come back, I'd love to have Chipper," Yankees
general manager Brian Cashman told YES' Jack Curry.
The likely future Hall of Famer and Atlanta Braves great isn't interested in
returning, but Cashman said it didn't hurt to inquire.
Cashman also admitted to contacting Lee: "I made a call. I liked him as a
player."
The chances of Lee returning are more realistic.
The Yankees are attempting to fill the void left by Teixeira's recent injury.
Teixeira strained a tendon in his right wrist and is expected to miss 8-10
weeks. He injured his wrist swinging a weighted bat before Team USA's first
exhibition game. Doctors say surgery is not needed. The Yankees are already
without center fielder Curtis Granderson (broken arm) and third baseman Alex
Rodriguez (hip surgery).
The Yankees led the majors with 245 home runs in 2012, something that will be
difficult to duplicate with the injuries and free agent departures.
Lee, 37, hasn't played in the majors since 2011. However, he could be an
upgrade to their current options and come relatively cheap.
Lee is a 15-year veteran who won the National League batting title in 2005
hitting .335 and slugged 331 career home runs. In 2011, he combined to hit 19
home runs and batted .267 with the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yankee fans my best know his a member of the 2003 Florida Marlins team who
defeated the Bronx Bombers in the World Series.
Juan Rivera is the top in-house candidate to replace Teixeira at first base.
He played the position on Sunday.
