Japan's Ironman to test MLB market
Shortstop Toritani signs with U.S. agency



PHOENIX -- The Ironman of Japan is sticking a toe into the waters of Major
League Baseball.

Shortstop Takashi Toritani, 33, has retained Scott Boras, the agent
confirmed. Boras, who hosted Toritani at his Southern California offices last
week, will spend the next month exploring the market for him.

"He's kind of the Cal Ripken of Japan," Boras said. "He's not missed a game
there in 10 years. He had really a great season. He's a great defensive
shortstop. We have needs here for those kinds of players. He has to make a
decision whether to return to play in Japan or to play here."

Toritani, a 5-foot-10, 176-pound left-handed hitter with a .285 career
batting average and some power, has spent his 11-year career with the Hanshin
Tigers. He has played in 1,444 consecutive games over the last 10 seasons.

His durability was a primary subject of discussion when he met with Boras
last week.

"We talked a lot about his routines, his diet, what he does to be that level
of player, that kind of player for so long playing a demanding position,"
Boras said. "He's a very flexible, gifted athlete. He's also a very
disciplined athlete. He has very stringent routines he's followed."

Boras said Toritani is looking for not just a roster spot but a chance to be
a regular. "He is truly one of Japan's star players," he said. "Very capable
guy offensively and defensively. Here we have a shortage of middle infielders
that have offensive capabilities. He is someone who will be looked at."

Toritani is capable of playing everywhere in the infield, according to Boras,
but gifted enough as a fielder to be a Major League shortstop.

"He's very athletic as a defender," Boras said. "He knows how to throw --
skill throws from all forms and positions. He's very, very good at playing
the ball, slow rollers. He has excellent range. ... Really the offensive
grade is the question, and his offensive numbers have been so good in Japan."

Boras said Toritani can sign with a Major League club after Nov. 30.
