Lyoto is a 3rd dan in Shotokan Karate under his father Yoshizo Machida - a 7th dan and JKA chief instructor. 2. Bas Rutten 2nd dan in Kyokushin Karate and TKD, former UFC HW Champion and 3-time King of Pancrase, famous for his deadly Liver Shot. Bas finished his career ona 22 fight unbeaten streak. 3. Guy Mezger Guy is a highly decorated US Karate fighter, twice World Full-Contact Karate Champion and a LHW champion in both the UFC and Pancrase. 4. Chuck Liddell Former UFC LHW Champion, Liddell began studying Kempo and Koei-Kan Karate at the age of 12; the tattoo on his scalp reads "Koei-Kan" inKanji. He got his black belt and won a national championship title in the style before joining John Hackleman in The Pit. Chuck has relied on the Karate background throughout his entire career. 5. George St-Pierre Having trained in Kyokushin and its various offshoots (Shidokan, Ashihara etc.) George wears a Gi and headband adorned with Karate symbols before entering the UFC cage. GSP has often said that Karate had a huge impact on his life as a fighter and person. St-Pierre has recently received his official 3rd Dan Diploma, a new black belt and a new Gi directly from From Shokei Matsui, president of the International Karate Organization (IKO) founded by Mas Oyama himself. 6. Yuki Kondo Yuki is an MMA veteran, having fought in Pancrace, PRIDE and the UFC with a total of 85 MMA fights. He has a background in Shorinji Kempo. 7. Katsunori Kikuno Kikuno is a master of both Kyokushin Karate and Judo, current DEEP LW Champion, famous for fighting in an unorthodox Sochin-dachi stance. 8. Rory Markham Rory who fought in the UFC, IFL andother promotions has trained traditional Karate, Shidokan, Kenpo and Kyokushin. 9. Jeff Joslin "The Inferno" is a former APEXno" is a former APEX XWW champion. A 4th dan in Wado-ryu Karate, Joslin has won all of his fights via KO/TKO and has only lost via very controversial Decisions. 10. Seth Petruzelli Seth is a Shito-ryu Karate expert and the first man to ever KO a much heavier (and heavily promoted) Kimbo Slice. 11. Ryo Chonan Ryo is a Kyokushin Karate expert and one of the 2 people to ever finish Anderson Silva. Ryo is currently fighting for DEEP where he was the 3rd DEEP MW champion. 12. Takanori Gomi "The Fireball Kid" has attributed his striking accuracy and power to training in Mushinjuku Karate. Gomi is a former Shooto WW Champion and was the only PRIDE LW Champion. 13. Semmy Schilt This huge K-1 and MMA fighter is a world famous Ashihara Karate practitioner and 3-time consecutive K-1 World GP champion. He has fought in Pride, UFC and Pancrase. 14. Sam Greco Famous Australian Seidokaikan Karateka. Entered MMA at therate practitioner and 3-time consecutive K-1 World 15. Chinzo Machida Lyoto's brother, 4th dan in Shotokan Karate and World vice-champion, Chinzo entered the world of MMA with a 1st round jaw-breaking KO over Muay Thai expert Christiano Rosa. 16. Antonio Carvalho A Shotokan Karate and BJJ expert, Antonio is a Shooto veteran who has fought for TKO Major League, MFC, Ironheart Crown and Cage Force. Antonio is one of 3 people to have defeated Hatsu Hioki. 17. Jeff Newton One of the most decorated point Karate fighters in the world, with numerous national and international titles to his name, Jeff was once dubbed "The Karate Kid". 18. Shonie Carter This Shidokan Karate expert is a former WEC WW champion and a UFC veteran. He is known for his flashy style, colorful personality, and effective use of the spinning backfist. 19. David Loiseau Karate and TKD blackbelt. He has fought in the UFC, EliteXC, and TKO Major League and is the former TKO MW Champion. 20. LeonardWilson Kempo Karate blackbelt, one of RitC top fighters, famous for his spinning back kick KO over Ray Elbe. All of his wins have come from KO/TKO. 21. Ed Ratcliff Karate and boxing expert holding a record of 7-3, "9 mm" Ratcliff loves Karate so much he has "Karate" written on his mouthpiece. 22. Jason Dent Blackbelt in Sanchi-ryu Karate, Jason has won all major belts in the NE Ohio area since his UFC bouts, the biggest being the NAAFS Pro Series. 23. Neil Grove Neil Grove is the Ultimate Challenge UK HW Champion. He holds a shodan in Goju-ryu Karate and won all his fights by way of TKO. 24. Taiei Kin LHW Seido-kaikan Karateka competing in K-1 and DREAM. Before switching to MMA, Kin was a distinguished fighter in the K-1 scene. Since 2006, he works as coach for Hong-man Choi. 25. Andrews Nakahara Japanese-Brazilian Kyokushin Karateka, the South American and All American Open Karate Champion who still trains in the International Karate Organization. 26. Mike Ciesnolevicz Mike built his base on Karate, Judo and kickboxing, honed his wrestling skills at Lock Haven University and eventually joined Pat Miletich in MFS. Mike is a blackbelt in Shorin Ryu Karate under John Korab. After leaving the UFC Mike began training Karate again and returned to his winning ways. 27. Takashi Nakakura Takashi is a Seido-kaikan Karate and Judo blackbelt. He is a former Shooto WW champion with a 15-3 record. 28. Mamed Khalidov Chechen MMA fighter competing in KSW, undefeated in the promotion. Mamed trained Shotokan Karate before entering MMA and often uses impressive spinning kicks in fights. 29. Maciej Gorski Ranked as #2 Polish LW fighter, Maciej spent 11 years in traditional Shotokan and still supplements his training with Karate seminars in Warsaw. 30. Torrance Taylor American Karate blackbelt, PKC national Karate champion Taylor is a former NAAFS champion and Fighter of the Year. 31. Tiawan Howard Blackbelt in Kaju Kenpo and American Kenpo, NAAFS 2006 MW Champion, USKBA 2004 Full Contact kickboxing national champ, PKC fighter of the year. 32. Frank Mir Blackbelt in Kempo Karate. Not really a Karate fighter nowadays but definitely worthy of mention on the list, Frank was introduced tomartial arts by his parents who are both Kempo Karate instructors. 33. Kestutis Arbocius Lithuanian Shidokan Karate expert. HW King of Pancrase with a 8-5 record. 34. Tariel Bitsadze Georgian Kyokushin Karate fighter with a 7-6 record. 35. Ryuta Noji Japanese Kyokushin Karate fighter with a 13-6 record. 36. Ausserio Silva Blackbelt in Shotokan and SeiwakaiKarate, trained under Seiwakai founder. UFC veteran and HW king of Pancrase. 37. Vitor Belfort Vitor trained Shotokan with Vinicius Antony (Yoshizo Machida's pupil), notably in 2001 to fight Heath Herring and in 2009 before defeating Rich Franklin. 38. Attila Vegh Slovakian Kempo Karate fighter with an impressive 24-4-2 record. 39. Mark Holst Shotokan Karate blackbelt, Freedom Fight and XKL LW Champion. 40. Nick Denis Kyokushin blackbelt, current KotC Canada BW Champion who has fought for World Victory Road and King of the Cage promotions. 41. Rich Franklin Former UFC MW champion. Karate was Franklin's first martial art which he trained up until college. Through Karate Rich became interested in MMA. 42. Antonio Silva "Bigfoot", the man who TKOd Fedor, the only EliteXC HW champion holds a black belt in Shotokan Karate. 43. Angelito Manguray This 42-year-old Shotokan Karate fighter is the Philippine LW URCC champion. 43. KJ Noons KJ is the former EliteXC LW Champion who holds a black belt in Kenpo Karate. 44. Nam Phan Nam currently fights in the UFC FW division and has a16-8 record. 45. Alexander Volkov Brown belt in Kyokushin with a 15-3 (12 KO) record, trains with the likes of Fedor Emelianenko and Gegard Mousasi. 46. Gunnar Nelson Goju-ryu black belt, Iceland's most promising up-and-coming Karate talent of 2005, currently undefeated in 10 bouts. 47. Jadamba Narantungalag This Mongolian Kyokushin blackbelt defeated former UFC WW contender Akihiro Gono in his SRC debut. 48. Tarec Saffiedine A blackbelt in Shihaishinkai Karate who has fought in multiple promotions including DREAM and Strikeforce. 49. John Makdessi Undefeated ShotokanKarate blackbelt with 9 wins, currently fighting for the UFC. 50. Ryan Jimmo This Canadian Karateka is the current MFC LHW champion with an impressive16-1 record. Ryan holds a 2nd degree Black Belt in Shito-Ryu Karate and is a Four-time National Karate Champion, Pan-Am Karate silver (x1) & bronze (x2) medalist and 14-time Provincial Karate Champion. 51. Lyman Good This Bellator WW Tournament Winner is also a sensei for Tiger Schulmann's Karate. 52. Uriah Hall Another member of Schulmann Karate with a 5-2 record. 53. Nick Pace Also amember of Schulmann Karate, Former RoC BW champion. 54. Jess Liaudin 10th Legion and ECC MW Champion, Knock Down Sport Budo International Champion. 55. Rodney Glunder This Kyokushin blackbelt has fought for M-1, Cage Rage, K-1, PRIDE, RINGS, Showtime and AoW. He holds notable wins over Cheick Kongo, Melvin Manhoef and Cyrille Diabate. 56. Peter Graham Kyokushin blackbelt, competing in K-1 and MMA with notable wins over Yusuke Kawaguchi and Alexander Emelianenko. 57. Glover Teixeira Hawaiian Kempo trained fighter from The Pit with a 17-2 record. 58. Court McGee Court started in Karate when he was 6 years old and fought in over 100 Karate bouts. Now a black stripe red belt in Shin-Toshi Karate, he is the Utah state LHW champion and TUF 11 winner. 59. Marius Zaromskis Kyokushin Karate expert, DREAM WW Champion. Holds notable victories over HayatoSakurai and Kazushi Sakuraba. 60. Yuichiro Nagashima 2nd dan of Nippon Kempo, 2010 K-1 World MAX Tournament winner, competing both in K-1 and MMA. 61. Sam Hoger This Karate black belt with a 10-4 record has fought in multiple promotions, including the UFC. 62. Travis Fulton 2nd Dan in American Kenpo. Travis has notched up over 300 Vale Tudo / MMA fights since 1996 and over 30 boxing matches since 1999.His record is an astounding 247-49-10! 63. Nick Diaz Currently ranked the #3 WW in the world, Nick has often spoken about the benefits of Karate training even though he holds no official rank in the art. 64. Rogent Lloret This Spanish HW MMA fighter and Karate black belt has fought in M1 and Bellator. He holds a 11-2 record. 65. Michelle Waterson A Karate student since age 10, "The Karate Hottie" holds a black belt in American Free Style Karate and a 8-3 MMA record. 66. Saori Ishioka "Shooting Star" Saori is a former 2-time All-Japan RF Karate Champion with a 11-7 record. 67. Mari Kaneko Kaneko is a 3-time All-Japan RF Karate Champion and 5-time runner-up. She is the former All-Japan Amateur Shooto Champion, the Smackgirl Japan Cup MW and the Strongest Queen Tournament runner-up. 68. Aisling Daly Currently the #7-ranked 125-pound female fighter in the world, Daly started out in Karate before doing ground fighting encouraged by her Karate teacher. 69. Pat Miletich The founder of Miletich Fighting Systems, which has trained over 90 televised fighters and no less than 11 MMA world champions, Miletich holds a 3rd Dan in Shuri-ryu Karate. 70. Stephen Thompson Kenpo Karate expert Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson is unbeaten both in Kickboxing (56-0 with 40KOs) and MMA (6-0 with 4 finishes). Wonderboy debuted in the UFC with a KO of the night (UFC 143). 71. Rodney Glunder Kyokushin black belt, 1997 Full Contact Karate European Champion. He has fought for M-1 Global, Cage Rage, K-1, PRIDE, RINGS, Showtime and Art of War. "The Silent Assassin" holds notable wins over Cheick Kongo, Melvin Manhoef and Cyrille Diabate. 72. Michael Page Karate and kickboxing champion Page made his professional MMA debut at Ultimate Challenge 26 with an amazing KO. 73. Kyoji Horiguchi 21-year-old traditional Karate prospect with 6 wins, 5 of them by KO. He is the 2010 Shooto rookie champion. 74. Lee Hasdell Hasdell, who started out in Karate and TKD, is a black belt in Kudo (Daido Juku) and has competed both in K-1 and MMA. He holds a number of kickboxing titles as well as the UTF RINGS Rules Superfight belt and TFF Vale Tudo Superfight belt. 75. Manvel Gamburyan Though "The Anvil" is better known for his Judo, he is also a 2nd degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate. Manvel is currently ranked as the #10 FW in the world by Sherdog. 76. Karen Darabedyan Darabedyan began studying Karate at the age of 5 and TKD at 9, earning his black belt in both by 18. Since then, he has compiled a 9-4 MMA record. Despite Karen’s strong Judo and grappling background, he tends to favor keeping the fight on his feet and striking. 77. Yuriy Kochkine 4th degree black belt in Kyokushin, multiple time Russian, Ukrainian and European champion, RINGS tournament winner. Yuriy was the first person to ever defeat Alistair Overeem in MMA - and twice! 78. Artur Sowinski One of the best Polish LW fighters, currently representing Poland's biggest MMA promotion KSW, this fighter lists Kyokushin as his base style. 79. Daron Cruickshank Coming from a family of martial artists, his mother a kickboxer and his father a Karateka, Daron has only lost twice and finished all but 1 of his 10 vanquished opponents. 80. Caleb Grummet Hailing from the San Do Jutsu Karate team and the Kaminari Dojo, Caleb is the Xtreme Cagefighting MW champion. 81. Gustavo Sampaio Gustavo is a 3rd Dan in Uechi-ryu Karate and a multiple-time champion in Full-contact Karate. None of his 5 MMA wins have gone the distance and the only loss came via decision. 82. Tim Sylvia Tim is a former two-time UFC HW Champ, a Powerhouse World Promotions HW Champ, the Superbrawl Return of the Heavyweights Winner and the Extreme Challenge HW Winner with a combined record of 30-7. Sylvia joined a Karate school as a kid and spent 8 years studying the art before going on to wrestling, grappling and finally MMA. 83. Xavier Foupa-Pokam Xavier is known for his brief stint in the UFC and his long career in British MMA. He is a WAFC 2008 World tournament winner, a XFC European Champion and a Karate brown belt. 84. Tony Fryklund Tony is a WW from MFS who fought for the UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Cage Rage and other promotions. He started Karate in his late teens and earned black belts in both Shotokan and Joe Louis American Karate. 85. Denis Stojnic Denis started his career with Sambo and Karate because of his father. He currently trains with the Golden Glory fight team alongside notable MMA fighters and kickboxers 86. Kristof Midoux Kristof started training in Kyokushin when he was only 4. Now a black belt, he has fought for the UFC, bodogFIGHT, K-1, IFC and RotR promotions. Kristof is also recognized as GSP's first trainer and inspired GSP to start a career in MMA. 87. Yves Jabouin Jabouin is known as a hard-hitting striker and has earned 11 of his 17 career wins by KO. "The martial art that I started with was Karate and it is a striking-based martial art. I think the art you start in really gets into your sub-conscious and that remains the base foundation of whatever you put on top of it" - says Yves. 88. James Lee James holds a black belt in Karate-based kickboxing and is a former full-contact Karate champion. Lee already has two MMA titles under his belt - King of The Cage LHW champion and Gladiator Challenge MW champion. 89. Jesse Bongfeldt Amateur Canadian WW Champion, Amateur Western Canadian LHW Champion, 2x TKO WW Champion, RITC WW and MW Champion. A brown belt in Isshin-ryu, Jesse said in an interview: "I started training young, as all of my family was in Judo and I loved Karate!" 90. Martijn de Jong Martijn is the MMA head coach of Team Golden Glory and the Tatsujin Dojo. The Kyokushin Budokai black belt and former Dutch Champion in Karate and MMA has many famous students now, such as Alistair and Valentijn Overeem, Siyar Bahadurzada and others. 91. Cole Escovedo Cole has been involved in martial arts since age 6 when he started Karate. He got into BJJ in '96, received his Karate black belt by 16 and started MMA at 19. Cole was the first ever WEC FW champ, PFC BW champ and IFC FW champ. 92. Yoislandy Izquierdo Yoislandy started training Karate at the age of 12 for health reasons and took 6 gold medals in Karate youth nationals. Now a brown belt in Wado-ryu Karate, Izquierdo is a CFA and ISKA LW champion. 93. Cyrille Diabate Cyrille is a Shidokan Karate black belt, French national champion and world champion in Shidokan. "The Snake" has fought in Palace FC, PRIDE, ShoXC, Deep, Cage Rage and UFC. 94. Matt Mitrione As a teenager in Illinois, Matt practiced Shotokan and other martial arts. He returned to combat sport training and took up MMA in 2009 to take part in the TUF10. 95. Brian Rogers Brian is a brown belt in Isshin-ryu Karate who currently fights for Bellator. 8 of his 9 wins have come by a way of KO. 96. Brent Weedman Brent is a lifelong practitioner of martial arts, having competed in full-contact Karate and Judo before taking up MMA. Weedman is currently signed with Bellator. 18 of his 20 MMA wins are KOs and subs. 97. Robert Devane Robert is a Kenpo Karate blackbelt, WUMA, WAKO and WKA world champion as well as CEO of Martial Arts Incorporated and a writer for Combat Magazine. 98. Sergey Golyaev Sergey has a Karate and MT background, starting Karate at 14 years old. He received the Sherdog "Upset of the Year" award in 2008 for his win over Takanori Gomi. 99. Willie Williams Willie is a Kyokushin Karateka who finished 3rd in the 2nd World Open Karate Tournament (1979). He has amassed a MMA record of 9-4 while representing World Oyama Karate. 100. Mariusz Pudzianowski (honorable mention) "Pudzian" has been a devout practitioner of Kyokushin since the age of 11. The intensity and discipline instilled in the art served as inspiration to work harder, become stronger and push the body beyond its limits - making him the most successful WSM contestant in history. 101. Ken Hamamura Ken began his career as a Karate stylist and holds a 2nd Dan in his original discipline. His background has given him devastating stand-up skills: making his professional debut at 20 years old, he knocked out both of his first two opponents inside the first minute. 102. Masaaki Satake Masaaki is a Japanese super HW Karateka, kickboxer and mixed martial artist. He represented the Seido-Kaikan organization in numerous Karate tournaments, winning most of them. After Kazuyoshi Ishii formed K-1, he became an active competitor there, with numerous victories. 103. Tony Lopez Tony is a Kyokushin Karate black belt out of Team Oyama currently fighting for the King of the Cage promotion and holding a 22-3 record in the organization and a 31-9 overall MMA record. He is a multiple-time KotC LHW, HW and Super HW Champion (once holding titles in two weight classes at the same time). Lopez is also the current Gladiator Challenge HW Champion, Brace For War HW Champion and PWP LHW Champion. 104. Pete Spratt Pete is a 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate with 46 pro MMA fights on his resume. He is the former Middleweight Champion of ISKA U.S., Ring of Fire, Reality Combat and Renegades Extreme Fighting (2x) as well as the Renegades Extreme Fighting Tournament Runner Up. 105. Wesley Johnson Johnson is a British award-winning musician and also a mixed martial artist. He is a black belt in Karate and has fought for Cage Rage and Ultimate Challenge, amassing 5 pro wins, all of them finishes in the 1st round! 106. Laura D'Auguste A member of Team Tiger Schulmann, Laura holds a 3rd degree black belt in Karate and is the former undefeated Ring of Combat and Reality Fighting WW Champion. D'Auguste holds a perfect 9-0 record with 5 wins coming via knockout. 107. Rob Emerson Rob is a Pancrase and UFC veteran and a cast member of The Ultimate Fighter 5. Emerson holds a black belt in Kyokushin Karate and is a member of Team Oyama. He is famous for knocking out Manny Gamburyan at UFC 87 in only 12 seconds, earning "Knockout of the Night" honors. 108. Hiroko Kitamura Hiroko is a member of the Karate-do Zendokai Koganei Dojo. She won the Real Fighting Karate-do 52 kg championship in 2008, earning her black belt. Kitamura also won the 2010 Jewels 52 kg Rough Stone Grand Prix, improving her MMA record to 6-1. 109. Shizuka Sugiyama Shizuka was first introduced to the Karate-Do Zendokai association and began studying Karate at 18 years old. She took second place in the Japan Open 2007 Vale Tudo Real Fighting Karate-do Championship, being defeated only by Saori Ishioka (also on the list). In 2008, Sugiyama was the winner of the Japan Open 2008 Vale Tudo Real Fighting Karate-do Championship. She would repeat this feat in 2009. 110. Edgelson Lua Okinawan Goju Ryu black belt, member of Daigaku Karate Kai. His cage-fighting debut took place in November 2007 and his first three fights saw him deliver two impressive knockouts - one with each hand. Edge fought for the Ultimate Challenge British Welterweight Title in October 2009 taking on the undefeated Brazilian fighter, Alberto Mina. (not finished) 111. Dyson Roberts Dyson joined Daigaku Karate Kai in 2007 and holds the rank of 5th Kyu (blue belt) in Okinawan Goju Ryu. Eager to begin his MMA career, he entered the reality Cage Fighting TV show "Fighting Hurts" and was selected as one of just 16 contestants. Though only a welterweight (and Orange belt at the time) he competed successfully against light-heavyweights to win a place in the final at the main Cage Rage show. 112. Rudy Bears Rudy is a black belt in Kempo Karate, currently signed with Bellator, formely fought for Titan Fighting Championships and M-1 Global. Bears has finished 12 out of his 14 career wins. 113. Paulo Afonso Paulo is a JKA Shotokan Karateka and sempai of Lyoto Machida. His titles in Karate include: state of Para champion, 4-time Brazilian champion, South American champion (team), Pan-American champion and World Cup champion. All of his MMA wins have come via KO. 114. Akira Corassani Akira is a black belt in Karate with a 9-3 record, who was a contestant on TUF14. Though Corassani lost in the semi-final round, and did not win the show, he signed an exclusive deal with the UFC. Corassani is expected to face Andy Ogle on September 29, 2012 at UFC on Fuel TV 5. 115. Mizuki Inoue Mizuki is a Karate specialist fighting out of Team Hakushinkai Karate with winning records in kickboxing, Shootboxing and MMA. She won the 2010 Jewels -56 kg Rough Stone Grand Prix tournament at 16 years of age, becoming one of the youngest female champions in a major MMA promotion. 116. Yancy Medeiros Yancy is an undefeated Karate black belt from Hawaii. 6 of his 9 wins have come via KO. 117. Eugene Fadiora Fadiora studied Karate for ten years before moving on to kickboxing and grappling. He then made the switch to MMA and achieved a 9-1 record as an amateur. Now a pro, Eugene has won 10 out of his 11 fights, losing only once to Karate prodigy Gunnar Nelson. 118. Paul Creighton Paul is a retired American mixed martial artist who competed in the LW division. He holds black belts in Goshin Jutsu Karate, Judo and BJJ. His only loss in MMA was to the legendary BJ Penn. 119. Daniel Sarafian Daniel spent 6 years in Karate before starting BJJ and then MMA. His curent pro MMA record is 7-2 with 6 finishes. 120. Renee Forte Renee has been training Karate since childhood. Now a pro MMA fighter he has a record of 7-1 with 4 finishes. He was a fighter on TUF: Brazil and is currently signed with the UFC. 121. Benjamin Foster Foster currently holds a black belt in Karate and Kickboxing and has been training various martial arts on and off for 7 years, he also has an amateur boxing record of 42-5 as a junior. He is undefeated in MMA and all of his wins have come via KO. 122. Giedrius Karavackas Giedrius is an International Karate Academy fighter with a 6-1 pro record (all finishes). He is currently signed with Bellator and holds a 2-0 record there. 123. Shannon Ritch Shannon is a black belt in Karate who is notorious for the sheer amount of MMA fights he's had - a total of 129 as of October 2012 with NONE ever lasting to the final bell! 124. Gerard Gordeau Gerard was a Kyokushin Karate blackbelt who got to the finals on UFC 1, famous for kicking Teila Tuli's teeth out on live TV. 125.
