What is Artist? Movie star? Music player?
You are all right! Since Dave Matthews become one of
my favorite singer and song-writer, I listen to his
songs everyday and every night. Actually I never find
that he can also being so political, and also think
about what can an artists do with people?
Only for entertainment? Or just go on the TV and laugh,
or taking pictures? Or they just earn a mount of monkey
by movies, talk shows, product mouthpiece? Are there any
artists can really do some significant masterpieces to our
normal citizens? In Taiwan, to be frankly, I didn’t see
this at all. But I found that in America or in some other
places or other nations. Artists are not only entertainers;
they may be storytellers, statesmanly singers or may be a
Governor of California like Arnold Schwarzenegger. There are
so many examples for us to refer and to learn from them

who is a singer and song writer who was known for his straight
talking, confessional lyrical style. From the lyrics, it seems
that Neil Young has woken up from his slumber and realized that
the unconscionable actions of the criminal elite must be addressed
and not simply sugar coated and quietly accepted as part
of a "post 9/11 mentality". It is totally a different accident.
There are some of my opinions about how artists do for
their own countries. Why a Canadian singer like Neil Young
wants to make himself so critical to make the controversy for
all people around the world? In Taiwan, we can see that there
are so many CDs sells in music-stores, but these CDs, for me,
they are only for entertainment or only for sells. They can not
really do anything at all. I think Neil Young’s purpose is not
only caring about how many records does he sold but also caring
about how to communicate with people and exchange his idea to
audiences like us.
After reading the lyrics of “Let’s impeach our president” ;
Neil point out where Bush was done the wrong policies, for example:
(1) Spying on citizens inside their own homes
(2) Hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
(3) Dividing our country into colors and still leaving black people neglected
(4) Unconsidered disasters of New Orleans
So sometimes I am really confused that what can an artist do with
the world? Does music or art can change the world? Or they are just
luxurious clothes of the rich? How can we encourage our artists to
do something positive about our country?
Recently, there is a royal musical ceremony called
The Golden Melody Award. I think if we can add some of
meaningful prices like The Most Contributive (Song / Record / Artist)
of the year. That will stimulate our artists to write some songs
that can superintend to our government or to guide our people to
know some truth or facts, but not only write some songs about
love between boys and girls. I think we had listened too many
garbage songs, so we always download the mp3 without buying the
official records... That it because our music in Taiwan they had
lose their values and become unworthy.
Actually I feel hopeful about our future in Taiwan become
I think our new generations are full of energy and vitality.
As an indie music band player, I know that many of our young
people were dedicated themselves to make something new.
So I am trust in ourselves, I believe our music careers
in Taiwan will be different soon. Maybe our indie band players
may turn underground music into mainstream market!
