The Legacy performance space, where we have captured Macbeth playing, sits in
the middle of Taipei, in an area packed with cool stores and clubs – Taiwan’s
equivalent of the Distillery district in Toronto. Canada’s Broken Social
Scene headlined at Legacy the last time they played Taipei, home to Arts and
Crafts label-mates Aphasia, a band that’s in the middle of Taiwan’s indie
music scene. Aphasia played Toronto last year as part of Harbourfront Centre’s
Taiwanfest and also headlined at Lee’s. In addition to making music, they
run White Wabbit records and operate the White Wabbit Record store – a hub
for Taipei’s indie musicians.
Macbeth delivered an impressive set Wednesday night and proved that a
fondness for 80′s influence isn’t limited to North American acts. We don’t
know how you say Joy Division in Mandarin but however it’s said, Macbeth
have borrowed well from the years of high hair and shoulder pads to create
their own compelling sound.
