Seattle Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee(notes) had a phenomenal postseason run
with the Philadelphia Phillies last year and there are more than a few teams
that are hoping he can do the same for them this year. Unfortunately, for the
M's, it's not looking like they are on that list with a 33-44 record that
puts them dead last in the American League West, 14 games back.

Since Lee's contract ends when the season does this year, he is very likely
to be traded. The Phillies, New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Texas
Rangers scouted him when he pitched against the Yanks the other night,
according to FOXSports, while two other reported suitors, the Los Angeles
Dodgers and Minnesota Twins, were absent that night.

ESPN has it from an American League GM that the Twins have a good chance of
getting Lee if it includes catching prospect Wilson Ramos(notes) in a package.

Other GMs also tell ESPN that the Mariners might not want to wait till the
end of July to trade Lee because if he has any kind of minor injury, his
stock will plummet.

Wondering how the Rangers traded for Bengie Molina, in spite of their
bankruptcy situation? Well, they gave up a mid-tier prospect, and in return,
the Giants took Chris Ray and kicked in dollars to offset the Molina
contract. In the end, the Rangers did not add salary.

This is how the Rangers could, theoretically, make a Cliff Lee trade. They
could include a contract of another player (Rich Harden?), and get some salary
relief from SEA to even out the money -- and in return, give SEA a strong
package of prospects. A deal without adding $.
