‧ The Marlins, who lost Armando Benitez to San Francisco, are seeking at
least one more late-inning reliever to join likely closer Guillermo Mota
and set-up man Tim Spooneybarger. They have inquired about free agents
Dustin Hermanson (17 saves for the Giants last year), one-time Marlin
Antonio Alfonseca and Valerio De Los Santos, among others.
Meanwhile, the Marlins told Chad Fox, 34, they are interested in bringing
him back. An injury to Fox's right (throwing) elbow -- which did not require
surgery -- shelved him for the last five months of last season. Fox, who has
been cleared to resume throwing, began last season as the Marlins' set-up man.
‧ Phillies free agent starter Eric Milton (14-6, 4.75 ERA) has attracted
the Marlins' interest.
‧ The Marlins have told free agent infielder Mike Mordecai they would like
to re-sign him but haven't offered him a contract.
‧ Marlins free agent Carl Pavano, who already has visited Boston, continues
his tour of suitors tonight in Detroit. Pavano then will visit the Yankees,
Baltimore, Seattle and Anaheim.
