考慮方程式 tan 3θ = ------------------ = tan60°= √3
1 - 3tan^2 θ
令 x = tanθ, 則 3x - x^3 = √3(1 - 3x^2), x^3 - 3√3 x^2 -3x + √3 = 0
此方程式的三根積是 -√3
另一方面 tan20°, tan80°, -tan40°都滿足 tan 3θ = √3
而且三者相異, 所以它們就是 x^3 - 3√3 x^2 -3x + √3 = 0 的三個根
因此 (tan20°)(tan80°)(-tan40°) = -√3 整理後即得所求
