Poor pitching to blame for fans’ lack of patience

    Red Sox fans were encouraged to be patient with Daisuke Matsuzaka,
     this being the right-hander’s first season in the big leagues.

    For the most part, the good citizens of Red Sox [team stats]
    Nation have indeed been patient with the exciting, highly-paid
    Japanese rookie. That is, until last night.

紅襪球迷們總是聽說，要對松坂大輔有點耐心，這是他在大聯盟的
第一個球季。

大部分時候，紅襪國的好公民們也確實對這個令人興奮、高薪水的
日本新人很有耐心。直到昨天晚上。

    Ahh, about last night. The Dice Man strolled out to the Fenway
    Park [map] mound in the sixth inning of this Labor Day start
    against the Toronto Blue Jays with a nine-run lead, and with the
    customary packed house whooping it all up. Before the inning was
    over, the masses were begging, pleading, with manager Terry
    Francona to get Matsuzaka out of the game. And Francona was
    anxious to accommodate them.

    Four runs already wereacross for the Blue Jays in the fateful
    sixth. Pitching coach John Farrell already had paid a visit to the
     mound to buy some time as reliever Javier Lopez warmed up, and
    now Francona was looking to catcher Jason Varitek [stats] and
    using his hand as a gabby puppet, the idea being that ’Tek should
     go out to the mound and stall for some more time.

致命的第六局，藍鳥隊已經拿下了四分。投手教練 John Farrell 已經

    After home plate umpire Mike Everitt dragged Varitek back to the
    plate, Mike Lowell got in on the act. The third baseman strolled
    to the mound to say a few words.

    By then, Lopez was ready. And finally, mercifully, Francona went
    out to get Matsuzaka, who was in the process of turning a nine-run
     lead into a one-run game.

    That Lopez was awful in his relief outing is not the point. That
    the Red Sox outlasted the Blue Jays and emerged with a 13-10
    victory that took 3 hours, 59 minutes to complete is not the
    point.

    No. The point is this: At a time when the Red Sox would very much
    like Matsuzaka to settle into some kind of looking-to-October
    consistency, he is instead being wildly inconsistent. There’s no
    way other way to put this: Matsuzaka has been lousy in three of
    his past four outings. In those four starts, three of them losses,
     he has allowed 20 earned runs in 23 2/3innings, which works out
    to a 7.60 ERA.

    No sense devoting much space here as to Francona’s postgame
    comments about Matsuzaka. The respected skipper works diligently
    to see the sunny side of things when talking about his players.

    Last night, Francona took things to an absurd level.

    “I thought early in the inning he really did have good stuff,”
    said Francona, noting that the inning “got away from him in a
    hurry.

     third baseman walloped a 3-2 pitch from Matsuzaka for a three-run
     homer.

    True, the rigors of the long Major League Baseball season might
    well be catching up with Matsuzaka. He has now made 28 starts and
    worked a total of 181 1/3innings, with nearly a month remaining in
     the season. Last season with the Seibu Lions, he worked a total
    of 186 1/3innings.

確實，大聯盟的長球季可能已經追上松坂的界限。他已經先發 28 場，
工作了 181 1/3 局，而球季還有將近一個月。在西武獅的上個球季，

    Is Matsuzaka gassed? Perhaps only he knows the answer to that
    question. But the bigger question is this: If the guy uses what’s
     left of the regular season to find his groove, how comfortable do
     you think the Red Sox [team stats] are going to be sending him
    out to start a postseason game?

松坂累了嗎？可能只有他自己知道。不過更重要的問題是：如果他把剩下

    Last night’s game had nothing to do with the inning “getting
    away” from Matsuzaka. And that home run by Glaus was no more a “
    great at-bat” than most other at-bats that result in pitches that
     leave the yard.

昨晚的比賽跟什麼東西從松坂「跑掉」沒有關係。Glaus 的全壘打也
不比其他打出去的球來得更特別到哪去。

    Some of the media took the bait and asked Matsuzaka about these
    bad breaks last night, whereupon the pitcher, through an
    interpreter, said, “Certainly there were a few bad breaks . . .”

    Stop right there. He gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 5 innings.

有些上鉤的媒體問松坂關於他的失投變化球。他透過翻譯回答：「確實

    Matsuzaka’s luck better change soon, or he’s going to get some
    really bad breaks come October.
