Francona said the reports from Fort Myers on Daisuke Matsuzaka are
encouraging. The right-hander has begun rehab from right shoulder
weakness, and it sounds like he is experiencing a delayed spring
training.
"His first day down there," Francona said, "he did the shuttle —
that was the stuff he missed when he was in the (World Baseball
Classic), and if you think about it, if you go down to Fort Myers
in the middle of July at 7:30 in the morning, and the first day
you run the shuttle and the second day you run the
mile-and-a-half, he did a good job. We're really proud of his
effort, and he put in another good effort today. I could think of
more fun things to do than to run a mile-and-a-half at 7:30 in the
morning by yourself."
Matsuzaka is playing catch on flat ground from 60 feet.
"As he gets stronger, that will ramp up," Francona said. "We're
going to get him stronger before we turn him loose. And when we
turn him loose, we're going to turn him loose and let him throw."
