Nowitzki wants to lead Germany in World Championships, Olympics

BERLIN - Germany has long been the world’s leading export nation, selling its
high-priced luxury cars, rich beer and fancy machinery across the world.

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, who hopes to lead Germany far in the
World Championships in Japan, has also become one of the country’s most
valuable export items with his $15 million salary and his sterling reputation
in the world’s top league.

Yet the Mavericks’franchise forward has happily sacrificed his summer
holidays again to play for his country, which finished second in the
European championship last year and third in the 2002 World Championships in
Indianapolis.

Nowitzki has been spending his summer training in Europe with his German

Nowitzki, 28, is coming off his best season in the NBA and finished third in
most valuable player voting by sportswriters with 544 points behind Steve Nash
of the Phoenix Suns (924) and LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers (688).
It was a long season for Nowitzki, who played 104 games.

Basketball has been growing rapidly in Germany, thanks in large part to
Nowitzki’s heroics for Dallas since 1999 and for Germany’s international
team, even if it is still a relatively minor sport in a country dominated by
soccer.

None of the local television networks have broadcast Germany’s exhibitions
before the World Championships.

Nowitzki, however, is unperturbed to be regarded as only a minor celebrity at
home, less known than soccer players, Formula One driver Michael Schumacher or
even retired tennis champion Boris Becker.

“That doesn’t matter to me at all,” said Nowitzki, who spends holidays in

“I never go into a tournament with concrete goals of where we’ll end up,”

Germany in the Olympics.

He came close to winning the NBA crown in June, helping Dallas to open a 2-0
lead against the Miami Heat in the finals, but Miami won the series 4-2.

him.

Nowitzki, whose team unexpectedly failed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics,
said he cherished dreams of making it to China in 2008.

“I’m starting to run out of time for that,” he said. “We were all
