Jason Kidd and Indiana Jones aren't all that different. Too much time has
passed for either to recapture the swashbuckling inspiration of his youth,
but both retain a commanding presence and would benefit from a better script.
The Dallas Mavericks acquired Kidd to make a difference, but they couldn't
figure out how to use him or put him in positions to be successful. The
result, in the words of Dirk Nowitzki, was another wasted season.
Kidd's reaction isn't that harsh. But as he reflects on his relationship with
Avery Johnson and looks ahead to life with new coach Rick Carlisle, Kidd
acknowledges his two-and-a-half months with the Mavericks weren't seamless.
"It was uncomfortable," Kidd said from New York, where he's an intern for a
hedge fund company. "I was disappointed that I couldn't help the team win
more games.
"I felt like I let my teammates down."
Jason Kidd's arrival in Dallas didn't solve the postseason headaches the
Mavericks have been experiencing.

Kidd is with Avenue Capital Group, a global investment firm that manages
assets estimated at $19.5 billion. The group invests in distressed and
undervalued securities, a description that applies to the Mavericks at the
moment.
Speculate all you want about the team's need to trade Josh Howard or shake up
the roster. A key to next season will be Carlisle's ability to devise a
system that maximizes the skills of his 35-year-old point guard.
Carlisle made that clear in his introductory news conference. Donnie Nelson,
the team's president of basketball operations, has talked about a system that
allows Kidd more room for offensive creativity. Nowitzki hopes Carlisle will
not turn Kidd into a weak-side, spot-up shooter the way Johnson did.
"Well, for one, I agree," Kidd said. "I feel my strength is to be able to
post up, to be able to run the pick-and-roll, but also just make the play
simple.
"There are going to be times where I do give up the ball and go to the
corner, but not every time. That doesn't give me an opportunity to do what I
feel I can do to help the team.
"So, I agree with their observations, and hopefully the extra time together
will make a difference."
Kidd refuses to criticize Johnson, which must come as a surprise to those who
insist Kidd undercut former Nets coach Byron Scott in New Jersey. The veteran
guard said he had a good relationship with Johnson and believes the offense
didn't click because the group simply didn't have enough time together. Kidd
said Howard and others experienced an offensive decline late in the season
because of efforts to incorporate him into the system.
So why did Nowitzki's numbers improve? He was the one person the Mavericks
turned to when the offense broke down.
"It was not Coach's fault," Kidd said. "I didn't do what I needed to do. That
falls on my shoulders. I accept that.
"Everyone was trying to figure out what worked. At the end of the day, you've
got Dirk. I think everyone kind of lost the sense of what Josh could do and
being able to go to Damp [Erick Dampier] for some things. I felt we tried to
make what would work for me and lost the sense of what everybody else does
well.
"That's the thing. You're spinning the wheel to see what is going to fit. You
spin it once or twice, and it doesn't work. Then you spin it again to do
something that is going to help this year."
It is now Carlisle's turn at the wheel. Kidd and Carlisle had dinner the
evening after the coach was introduced – who has Carlisle not broken bread
with since joining the Mavericks other than me? – and the point guard
assured him he was on board. Carlisle told Kidd he trusted him to call the
plays and run the team.
Carlisle also referred to the pride that Kidd and Nowitzki have as future
Hall of Fame players. That made an impression.
"He didn't call me old," Kidd said. "If he was still on the media side, he
might have called me old."
Old? Kidd isn't old.
He's just appearing in his latest sequel.
