Sometimes, wishes come true. And sometimes, you should be careful what you
wish for. That's the way it was for the Mavericks with Jason Kidd.
Maybe getting Kidd won't turn out to be a mismatched fit for the Mavericks,
but for the last couple of months of the 2007-08 season, it was.
Coach Avery Johnson wanted Kidd and wasn't a fan of Devin Harris' style. So
when the Mavericks got a chance to get one of the game's best point guards,
they jumped. At least, they jumped after it took a couple of false starts to
complete the deal with New Jersey.
They spent the rest of the season heaving and gasping, with Johnson finally
getting a pink slip. That followed a poor first-round playoff series when New
Orleans whacked the Mavericks, 4-1.
Sometimes, however, purging one's system of a key piece can improve the
chemistry considerably. With Rick Carlisle replacing Johnson, Kidd has been
more at ease and has run the Mavericks' offense with more efficiency. The
Mavericks still can't say that the trade was a success. That day might never
come.
But their improved play is enough to make the results of this wish a little
easier to take.
