[外電] Record rally: Down 29, Dallas Mavericks surge past Wolve

 The Mavericks took the expressway from awful to awesome Tuesday night, doing
so in record fashion.

They fell behind by 29 points, then engineered the biggest comeback in
franchise history behind Jason Terry's uncanny shooting, Dirk Nowitzki's
toughness and a gritty defense that had been missing in action in a lousy
first half.


The Mavericks ended up pulling free for a 107-100 victory over the Minnesota
Timberwolves at American Airlines Center.

Terry finished with 29 points, Nowitzki had 24 and Josh Howard had 23.

It was a remarkable night, one that started with the Mavericks playing
absolutely miserably and ended with brilliance.

The only reason the 27 points the Mavericks surrendered in the first quarter
didn't look too bad is because of the 35 they gave up to Minnesota in the
second quarter.

The defense went from bad to worse and the Mavericks didn't help it on the
other end as they decided jump shots were all they needed in this game.

At halftime, they had six points in the paint, while the Timberwolves had 28.
And, amazingly, the crowd was not booing the Mavericks off the court at
halftime.

Maybe they knew what was coming, because as sorry as the Mavericks were in
the first half, they played a hustling, defensive-minded style that slowly
chopped into Minnesota's massive lead.

Actually, it wasn't that slow. The Mavericks ate off big chunks of the
deficit and found themselves within 86-80 early in the fourth quarter.

The biggest comeback in franchise history was 25 points against Denver in
1994.

The Mavericks were on their way to making this one bigger. They trailed 70-41
with just over 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

It had been the 3-pointer that betrayed the Mavericks in the first half, and
the 3-pointer that brought them back.

They hit five of their first 12 in the second half, including one from Terry
with 7:30 to go that brought the Mavericks within 89-85.

Then Jason Kidd ripped off a steal and fed Terry for a tough layup and a
two-point game. After an Al Jefferson bucket, the Mavericks scored eight in a
row, with four players contributing, to go ahead 95-91.

That was the end of a 54-21 blitz.

From there, it was a matter of letting the adrenaline take them home.

All in the family: Rick Carlisle and Kevin McHale were stalking the sidelines
on opposite ends of the floor - briefly. Carlisle got ejected with 6:30 to go
in the first quarter.

Both players were on the Celtics teams in the '80s that won championships.

So were Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, the late Dennis Johnson and Jerry Sichting,
who are just some of the Celtics of that era who have gone on to either
successful coaching or management careers.

"That was a team that had a bunch of guys that knew how to play basketball,"
McHale said. "I guess you didn't know that until later on. It just happened
real easily and everybody knew what they were doing and adjustments were
made. We made half the adjustments ourselves on the floor.

"I think later on when we had a bunch of new guys coming in, you realized how
blessed you were. All of the sudden, the new guys are in and you say: hey,
we're going to change up this coverage and they look at you like: what? And
you're like: oh boy."

Briefly: Members of the Texas Tech and Mississippi football teams attended
Tuesday's game as part of the festivities leading up to the Cotton Bowl ...
Also in attendance: Roger Staubach, who had a front-row seat.
