Dallas Mavericks defense sometimes waits on offense

When the Mavericks met in their locker room at halftime of their game Tuesday
against the Timberwolves, they were shooting 36.8 percent from the field and
had scored 40 points.
There was talk of pride, of performing competently for the fans who had paid
a lot of money to watch them, of playing hard and bearing down on defense.
When the Mavericks met in their locker room at halftime of their game Friday
against the 76ers, they were shooting 34.1 percent from the field and had
scored 40 points.
And they felt like they were in pretty good shape. In fact, there was
optimism.
"I actually thought our defense was pretty good," Dirk Nowitzki said. "We
held [Philadelphia] to 44 points, which isn’t bad. But offensively we just
looked out of synch."
In Dallas, however, offense is not a problem — not with Jason Terry having
the best year of his career, Nowitzki again playing at an elite level, Josh
Howard making regular contributions and Jason Kidd directing the show.
When Nowitzki looked at the halftime stats sheet, he knew better moments were
ahead. Terry, Howard and Nowitzki were a combined 6-of-30 from the field, and
that poor shooting was unlikely to continue.
"We have a lot of weapons offensively and it’s rare that everybody’s off,"
he said. "Usually one guy gets going. Josh or I am making shots. If not, then
Jet [Terry] is the one. But in the first half nobody really had it going. So
that was rare. We just got to make sure that our defense is OK. Offensively
we have enough confidence that we can get it going."
The Mavericks got it going in both games. There was greater concern against
the T’wolves because Minnesota had made 60.5 percent of its field-goal
attempts in the first half and led by 22.
The Mavericks’ offense had to respond in the second half because Dallas
trailed by 29 points in the third quarter. So points were mandatory.
But defense was more important. The Mavericks held the T’wolves to only 36.8
percent of their shots in the second half and outscored Minnesota 67-38 to
win the game.
Against Philadelphia, the defense was consistent, so all the Mavericks had to
do was wait for their offense to click. And it did. Terry had 19 points in
the second half and Nowitzki had 16 in the fourth quarter.
Kidd said that the first half against Philadelphia "was probably one of our
worst shooting performances. On the flip side, our defense was maybe one of
our best — holding those guys in the 30s and low 40s shooting the ball.
While we couldn’t make a shot, the best thing was we didn’t let those guys
make a shot.
"Dirk eventually is going to make shots," Kidd said. "J.T. is going to make
shots. So I don’t think we ever panic about the offensive end. If it was the
reverse where it was our defense, that’s where we’d be worried."
The Mavericks would like to experience the best of both worlds today when
they meet the 10-23 Grizzlies in Memphis at 3 p.m. This continues a stretch
of games against opponents with records worse than .500, and with home games
Tuesday and Thursday against the Clippers and Knicks, respectively, the
Mavericks have a chance to improve their 20-12 record.
"I just continue to say every game is important," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle
said. "We’ve had our struggles against the really good teams and the
sub-.500 teams, so we take nothing for granted."
Overall, no doubt, Carlisle urges his team to respect opponents and play at a
high level. But if there is one area where perhaps he can come close to
taking something for granted, it’s the Mavericks’ ability to play offense.
