Dallas Mavericks still searching for consistent starter at shooting guard

In describing the Mavericks' shooting guard position, coach Rick Carlisle
called it a "position of opportunity."

That was a polite way of saying that nobody has grabbed the position like
they deserve to own it all season.

The list of applicants hasn't changed. Antoine Wright, Gerald Green, Devean
George, J.J. Barea, and even Jerry Stackhouse and Jason Terry have started at
the position opposite Jason Kidd.

Except for rare occasions, Terry is entrenched as the sixth man. Stackhouse
is on the inactive list and seems likely to stay there until either he is
traded or his right foot gets completely healthy.

When Wright plays as he did Tuesday against the LA Clippers – scoring six
points with an assist and a rebound in eight minutes to start the game – he
seems very capable of filling the role. But Carlisle knows it's not an easy
job. He's thankful he's had team players who haven't whined about the
situation.

Terry is going to play 30 minutes. What the coach is looking for is somebody
who can bring something to the table in the first eight minutes of the first
and third quarters.

"We're more than a third of the way through it, and we still haven't settled
anything," Carlisle said. "It's still up for grabs."
