http://tinyurl.com/86gpkt If looking for a bright spot about the Mavericks' four-game losing streak, there is a big difference between this funk and the five-game skid in November. Back then, they were five games under .500. This time, they are five games over .500. If they can come up with the same sort of manly response they had when things looked bleak after losing five in a row two months ago, the Mavericks will be just fine. That's a big if, however. And it's going to take a spark. Last time, it was an overtime win at New York that would spring the Mavericks on a 20-6 surge that lifted them to nine games above .500. "We fought through a tough stretch early in the year and we're going to fight through this," coach Rick Carlisle said. "There's no easy way out of a losing streak. It's got to be a team effort. Everybody can do something better to help us through this, and that includes coaches, players, everybody." The backslide has left them at another crossroads. They either fight their way out of this funk like they did the first time, or they dawdle along and face the real possibility of missing the playoffs. The variable in both of those alternatives would be a trade between now and the Feb. 19 deadline. They are exploring their options, which is no different than any other season. It was about this time last year that rumblings first cropped up regarding Jason Kidd. It's become obvious with Josh Howard out that the Mavericks need another scorer. But those don't grow on trees. In the meantime, they will try to clear their heads. The players were given Thursday off after five games in seven days. Carlisle used Jason Terry as a prime example of what the Mavericks need. Terry has been playing on a sore right leg and in Tuesday's game at Denver, suffered a blow to the other leg. Carlisle said it was the first time all year that Terry didn't go out and shoot a long session of jump shots before the game. "He's a determined guy," Carlisle said. "He's one of the core guys that's kind of the spirit of our team. He's huge. Any success we've had this year, he's had a lot to do with. "He's a fighter, a battler. And right now, we've got to have 14 battlers. That's where we are. We've got to help each other and get better before Saturday night." That would be when Utah visits and if anybody thinks the Mavericks will have an easy time breaking their losing streak, they haven't been paying attention to Utah. The Jazz and Mavericks now officially have a history. Dirk Nowitzki has been suspended for a game after the two most recent trips to Utah. Go back further and Jerry Stackhouse has accused the Jazz of "cowardly" tactics. Neither team is particularly fond of the other. Briefly: The Mavericks plan to have an intense practice session today, since this is the first time since early December that they have had two full off-days consecutively without a holiday or travel day in between. Thursday was used as a rest day, although several players came to the trainer's room for treatments. ... The Heroes Basketball Organization will unveil plans for a youth basketball center today that will be named in honor of owner Mark Cuban. An old YWCA facility at 1800 Bonnie View Road will undergo a major renovation and become a recreational center with an NBA-style activities area to focus on basketball, technology, academics and community gatherings.
