Mavs believe Carroll can play major role

DALLAS — The Mavericks are confident Matt Carroll will last longer in Dallas
than his younger brother, Pat.
In August 2006, the Mavs signed four prospects, including forward Pat Carroll
and guard Jose Juan Barea.
"He’s a lefty," Barea said of Pat Carroll. "He was the first one cut."
As for Pat’s older brother, Matt?
"Straight-out, knock-down shooter," Barea said. "It never hurts to have a
shooter like that on the team."
Acquired Friday from Charlotte, along with center Ryan Hollins, for DeSagana
Diop, Carroll went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2003. He’s played for
Portland, San Antonio and Charlotte.
He’s now the Mavs’ next hope (see Eddie Jones) to spread the floor and make
it rain from 3-point land. The Mavs entered Saturday’s game ranked 26th in
the league in 3-point shooting percentage (33.3).
"He’s a proven NBA shooter," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "He’s not just
a 3-point shooter, but he’s a terrific mid-range player, too. That’s why we
made the deal, to get better with our overall shooting."
Carroll will join the Mavs on Monday in Philadelphia, his hometown, and could
be in uniform. The Mavs would love the kind of boost Utah received last
season after trading for 76ers sharpshooter Kyle Korver.
Carroll, whose minutes dropped to 14.0 this season, enters a crowded house of
shooting guards with the Mavs.
"We’ve been hoping for clarity all year with a couple of the positions,"
Carlisle said. "Matt brings a specific skill to our team, so from that
standpoint, it’s good. We have other guys that bring other specific skills.
I don’t think I can really give you a definite answer at this point, but I
do know he’s a good player and I know he can help us."
The trade puts the Mavs’ roster at the maximum 15 players for the first time
this season.
Hollins arrives
The other piece to Friday’s trade, 7-foot center Ryan Hollins, arrived in
Dallas on Saturday, met his new teammates and took his physical, allowing him
to practice today.
Hollins, a lanky leaper, should be cleared to be on the active roster in
Monday afternoon’s game at Philadelphia.
"I’m looking forward to being here," Hollins said. "I’m a guy who brings
energy and definitely brings a different component to our [big men]."
Diop will be missed
DeSagana Diop was a favorite with teammates. They were sorry to see him go.
"Gana will be fine," guard J.J. Barea said. "He’s a great guy. He stays
positive, and he works hard. He’ll be fine wherever he goes. He’s my guy,
the best teammate, so it’s always hard, but he’ll be fine."
Cuban charity
Mavs owner Mark Cuban told Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, via Cuban’s blog, to
select a charity and Cuban will match the $25,000 the league fined him Friday
stemming from their conflict Tuesday at Denver.
Cuban said Smith and the Nuggets haven’t responded yet, so he’s come up
with a contingency plan in case he doesn’t hear back.
"I’ll make a donation to the NHL Players Association Goals and Dreams Fund
in the names of Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore," Cuban said.
The connection?
First, Bertuzzi’s cheap shot in a 2004 game ended Moore’s career. Second,
Moore played for the Colorado Avalanche, a Denver team.
Cuban was upset that Smith’s swinging elbow that missed Antoine Wright did
not result in a technical foul at the time or a league suspension after
review.
