Former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson could have returned to an NBA bench
this week, but he turned down a five-year contract offer from the Memphis
Grizzlies, ESPN.com reported Friday.
Johnson is working for ESPN as a studio analyst on the network's NBA coverage.
"I've said all along [that] at the right time and in the right situation, I
will coach again," Johnson told ESPN on Friday. "I am enjoying my time at
ESPN and with my family. I wish the Grizzlies the very best."
Lionel Hollins is working on a contract with the Grizzlies to serve as their
head coach. Memphis general manager Chris Wallace confirmed that he hoped to
reach an agreement with the Milwaukee Bucks assistant by the end of the
weekend.
Assistant Johnny Davis is the interim coach and probably will be through
today's game against New Jersey.
