AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Brandon Bass hasn't had the kind of season he wants,
and he certainly hasn't had the kind of season the Mavericks want.
It's not so much his offensive numbers. A little over eight points and four
rebounds is what he produced last season, and it's what he's averaging this
season.
But Bass has been a liability at the defensive end too often.
Not so Friday night against the Pistons. He matched the energy of Detroit's
Jason Maxiell and Antonio McDyess, and was a big reason why the Mavericks
held the Pistons to only two fast-break points.
"He did a great job defensively," coach Rick Carlisle said of Bass. "The
points aren't as big an issue with me as how he's doing defensively. He's
really come a long way with his understanding of what we're doing.
"He did a great job around the boards, and a lot of times, he was overmatched
size-wise. That shows he was really working."
It is what the Mavericks need from Bass, who is one of the energy guys off
the bench and has to come in with a certain level of passion. And he has to
pay attention to the details on defense.
