Coaches see things that fans, media and even players often miss.
But the Mavericks won't go long without knowing about their defensive
liabilities that have shown up a couple of times during their four-game
winning streak and particularly Wednesday against Portland.
"We can't allow a good shooting night to erode what we're capable of doing
defensively," Rick Carlisle said. "Our good shooting was a little bit of a
deodorant for our subpar defense. It always concerns me when we trade
baskets."
They did that for too long with the Blazers.
The Blazers shot 48 percent for the game. Through three quarters, it was at
52 percent. The Mavericks have been on an offensive roll lately, but even the
most skilled shooting and the most fluid play on that end won't last.
When the shots weren't falling so frequently in the fourth quarter, the
Mavericks' defense wasn't good enough to save them. The only thing that did
was that they had a nice buffer.
They were up by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter and up by 11 with 56
seconds to play.
They survived.
But the coach knows. It's on the defensive end that the Mavericks have to
refocus before taking the court tonight in Utah.
