Rick Carlisle made a radical change last week and his motivation was immediately questioned in some corners, although none that Carlisle should take seriously. Why would Carlisle suddenly surrender play-calling responsibilities to Jason Kidd? An order from Mark Cuban? Player unrest? A visit in a dream from Dr. James A. Naismith? Those possibilities were dismissed rather quickly, so after giving it considerable thought for a few minutes, I came up with two theories: 1. Carlisle was belatedly delivering on a campaign promise. 2. After the embarrassing 24-point loss at Boston, Carlisle read the profound words of the musical poet Kris Kristofferson, who furnished Janis Joplin with the line that "freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose." Whatever his source of motivation, the fact is that only one person deserves credit for injecting a large dose of adrenalin in the Mavericks, and that’s the head coach. Carlisle not only put Kidd in the driver’s seat, but he also hired the hyper-competitive Darrell Armstrong to be an assistant coach. "I think the key to this has been Rick Carlisle and his willingness and ability to adjust," Cuban said. "He wanted to bring in Darrell Armstrong to add a little fire and someone who can drink a cup of coffee with 23 sugars every day." If Armstrong’s boundless energy is contagious, then he could be the perfect antidote for a team that sometimes underperformed because of a lack of energy. That hasn’t been the case during the current winning streak, which reached four games Wednesday, when the Mavericks defeated the Blazers 104-99 despite a mistake Carlisle admitted that he made late in the game. With 27 seconds left and a nine-point lead, he removed Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Josh Howard from the game. The Blazers got two quick 3-pointers, however, and the starters returned with 10.4 seconds left. "It’s an example of needing to respect the talent in this league," Carlisle said in a self-critique. Dallas got two free throws each from Terry and Nowitzki in the last 7 seconds to hold off the Blazers. At 29-19, the Mavericks are 10 games better than .500 for the first time this season. And Carlisle is doing what he promised to do in May, when he was hired and announced that he was going to employ an up-tempo style that utilized Kidd’s considerable talents. "I go into every year trying to find ways to not call plays," Carlisle said. "I’m a believer in the flow of the game, and I’m a believer that play-calling can inhibit creativity. But from time to time, it’s a necessity. You got to have stuff tailored to your personnel." On the Mavericks’ recent road trip, Carlisle saw a team that had inexplicable extremes: impressive victories in Philadelphia and Detroit, ugly losses in Milwaukee and Boston. When the Mavericks came home, they were 25-19, and while certainly not a bad team, they were far from threatening. So with nothing left to lose, Carlisle gave Kidd freedom. "Jason has an amazing ability to see and influence a game," Cuban said. "There aren’t many coaches in the league that would just turn over that responsibility, even to a great player like Jason. ... Our game is just flowing so much better since we don’t have to look over to the bench for calls." For a coach who has built a solid reputation as conservative, the flexibility demonstrated by Carlisle is impressive. The confidence the Mavericks project on the court is profoundly new. They should have had their fourth consecutive double-digit victory Wednesday night, but they still had enough composure to get the victory. Their body language is far different on the court now than it was two weeks ago. They actually have a bit of swagger about them, and that is also new. Give Carlisle credit. He may have a reputation of being rigid, but he also has one of being smart, and right now, the adjustment he has made looks nothing less than brilliant. ********************************************************************* -- Only the strong survive- Iverson ═█┘ W ● ●︵ ● ●)) <\ / \\ />>/ ╲> >> ========= http://www.wretch.cc/blog/AWEI3 ========= -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.114.81.64
