With Terry out, others will have to step up

The Mavericks won't be beating any bushes in hopes of finding a replacement
for Jason Terry, unless those bushes are in their backyard.
Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, said the
Mavericks will give their players opportunities to pick up the slack in the
absence of Terry, who averages 20 points per game but will be out several
weeks with a broken bone in his left hand.
That means the pending return of Jerry Stackhouse couldn't be more
well-timed.
Stackhouse has been targeting Thursday's game against Boston for his return
after nearly three months of rehabilitating a foot injury.
That time off started with Stackhouse contemplating whether his time as a
Maverick was over. But a meeting with coach Rick Carlisle recently convinced
Stackhouse he can be a contributor in the second-half playoff drive.
"You can't replace Jet," Nelson said Sunday. "He's having the best season of
his career. I don't know if there's any Band-Aid you can put on that. It's
like trying to replace any of our other key guys.
"The bad news is obvious. But the silver lining is, it's probably our deepest
position. And we've got Stack knocking on the door to come back."
The Mavericks will know more about Stackhouse's status after they see how he
recovers from practice today. J.J. Barea, Antoine Wright, Devean George,
Gerald Green and Matt Carroll could get looks to help ease the scoring burden
on Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard.
Nelson said the Mavericks will remain active in potential trade talks up to
the Feb. 19 deadline.
"That's our job," he said.
Briefly: The Mavericks were given Sunday off after the punishing overtime
victory over Chicago on Saturday. ... The Mavericks' sellout Saturday was
their 299th in a row in the regular season. Tuesday will push them to 300.
... Nowitzki's 44 points against the Bulls marked his third 40-plus game of
the season. It's the first time in his career he's had more than two 40-point
nights in a season. The Mavericks are 8-3 all-time when Nowitzki scores 40 or
more.
