No big trades appear in Dallas Mavericks’ future

DALLAS — The evidence is piling up against the Dallas Mavericks making a
trade before Thursday’s deadline.
Any trade, really. But in particular, any major deal.
Wise men in the NBA always say that when you make a major trade, you need at
least a year and probably closer to two years to figure out whether it worked.
If you had based the Jason Kidd trade on last season alone, it would have
been the ultimate failure.
Now? It doesn’t look all that bad. In fact, the Mavericks lately have put
together their best basketball since trading Devin Harris for Kidd a year
ago. They won six of seven heading into the Boston game Thursday.
Think about what making a significant trade would mean right now. You would
be flushing this season because bringing in a marquee player means another
adjustment period. Acquiring high-profile players at the trade deadline
almost never results in instant gratification, although Detroit and Rasheed
Wallace might disagree.
Usually, it requires another class in team chemistry and there’s no
guarantee it would work.
If the Mavericks do anything between now and the deadline, look for it to be
for depth, with an emphasis on ballhandling or shooting.
As things stand now, the Mavericks have positioned themselves solidly in the
Western Conference and have learned how to play well with each other. Those
are qualities that should not be taken lightly, because they’re not always
easy to come by.
