PHOENIX – Trades and rumors of trades swirl during All-Star Weekend. The
Mavericks led the charge one year ago with their acquisition of Jason Kidd.
Dirk Nowitzki doesn't sound like a man who buys into the idea that another
major move is necessary. The team's lone representative in this year's
All-Star Game said he believes the Mavericks' performance in recent weeks
warrants the nucleus be kept together for the rest of the season.
"I think so," Nowitzki said. "We've had a good last two or three weeks. Guys
have played hard, and I'm looking forward to our last 30 games of the season."
That won't stop speculation from taking place. One making the rounds is the
Mavericks and New Jersey have had discussions that would send Vince Carter to
Dallas in a package that would include Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse.
The Mavericks have said they are not looking to trade Howard.
"I think Josh has come around these last two weeks," Nowitzki said. "I think
getting Darrell Armstrong [assistant coach] in really helped him get juiced
up again, playing with energy, playing hard for us. That's great.
"We need Josh to play on a high level if we want to compete and beat the best
of them.
"If we can get healthy soon and keep working, keep doing what we're doing, I
think we're on a good track."
