The primary reason that Gerald Green, who was cut by his hometown Rockets
last season, rarely gets off the bench despite his jaw-dropping athleticism
and sweet jumper is that he doesn't play a lick of defense.
But that's not the only reason. Green has the ability to score in bunches,
especially in the open court, but he's not a good halfcourt offensive player.
He struggles to create his own shot, but that doesn't stop him from trying.
And that makes him one of the NBA's biggest black holes.
Basketball-statistics.com provides evidence with this study, which I found on
The Two-Man Game. It's another one of those complicated formula deals, but
there's a simple list for folks like me who took the bare minimum of math in
college.
And Gerald Green is ranked as the league's second-biggest black hole.
There are some good players on the list -- Josh Howard is No. 5 -- but it's
never a good thing to be considered a black hole. Especially when you're
scrapping for every second of playing time you can get.
