Carlisle: "I would like to have as many of them back as possible" May 15, 2009 Posted by Earl K. Sneed Dallas-- For Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, keeping intact as much of the same Mavs unit as possible going into next season is top billing this summer. That and having a healthy Josh Howard. After his first year coaching the Mavericks, Carlisle learned quickly that the Mavs are a different team when Howard is in the lineup. If Howard is healthy, Carlisle says the Mavs are built to contend as currently constructed. “Josh’s health has got to be the number one priority,” Carlisle said. “If surgery is the right way to go then that’s what we’ll do and then we‘ll go from there.” Howard missed 30 games over the course of the season with ankle and wrist problems, but he meets with a specialist in New York next week to address the best way to resolve his ailments. “This guy is such an important player, we’ve got to get him right,” Carlisle said. With a veteran group, including First Team All-NBA forward Dirk Nowitzki, Carlisle admits the window to bring a championship to Dallas while Nowitzki is in a Dallas uniform may close in the coming seasons. Carlisle, however, has confidence that GM Donnie Nelson and Mavs owner Mark Cuban will do everything possible to build a contender, with No. 41 as the centerpiece. The Mavs may look a lot like the 2008-09 team next season Danny Bollinger/ Dallas Mavericks Manager of Publishing “’Donnie and I met with every player yesterday,” Carlisle said. “The meetings were really terrific and constructive. We’ve got a really great feeling about all the guys that were here. Personally, I would like to have as many of them back as possible.” “Having said that, I know that we are going to have to make some changes to try to upgrade the team some. But, everybody was extremely positive. Everybody contributed. It’s a bunch of good team-guys that cared about each other. It was a positive year from the stand point of progress being made, but we‘ve got to make more because we want to be a championship team.” Still, the Mavs may add variables to the equation this summer with off-season moves to bring in pieces to play alongside Nowitzki. Earlier in the week Nowitzki expressed his confidence in the Mavs’ front office to build a winner. Carlisle echoed those thoughts. “We understand where he (Nowitzki) is at in his career, and we understand how he feels about it. We feel the same way. We aren’t in this to get to the playoffs and try to win a round or two. We’re in this to get the ring.” “Anything we can do to improve the team, to improve the elements to enhance our entire situation, we’re going to do it. You know that because you know who our owner is. Mark (Cuban) is the best.” For all of your Dallas Mavericks off-season news, stay tuned to Mavs.com. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.172.142.8
