http://tinyurl.com/mtq4pw Donnie Nelson's mission as president of basketball operations requires that he explore all avenues to improve the Mavericks. Starting in 2010, he can do some of that work virtually in his backyard. Nelson has purchased the majority interest in a franchise that will relocate from Colorado to Frisco, just a few full-court passes from his home in the rapidly growing suburb north of Dallas, the NBA Development League announced Thursday at American Airlines Center. Nelson and partner Evan Wyly, a Dallas native and chairman of Green Mountain Energy, have formed Texas D-League Management, LLC, which will operate the franchise. Nelson said they will operate as a tandem, although Nelson is the principal owner. The team will be called Texas, with the nickname to be chosen through a fan contest. It will play at Dr Pepper Arena, recently renovated to include luxury boxes and about 5,000 seats. "We have a fantastic newly renovated arena and a great market," D-League commissioner Dan Reed said. "But most importantly, interest from Donnie Nelson and Evan Wyly as local owners really put it over the top." Frisco Mayor Maher Maso said with Nelson's involvement, along with the vibrant community he lives in, "We have a great combination for success." The logistics of moving the team to Frisco, plus the fact the arena only reopened last week, meant the new team could not begin operations until the 2010-11 season, Nelson said. He emphasized the team's presence will be a boon for basketball in general in the area. Other possibilities could present themselves. Frisco could become a practice facility for the Mavericks, and other basketball teams could use Frisco as a base. A couple of years ago, the Chinese national team spent time in the Dallas area for training camp. "This is a really cool interactive way we can foster relationships," he said. "There are lots of ways we can utilize this team to bring other business opportunities. "I can't have the Dallas Mavericks play against a team like that," he said, referring to the Chinese team. "But maybe we can get a D-League All-Star team to take on those opportunities." The sale price of the team was not divulged. But recent sales of NBADL teams have averaged between $2 million and $2.25 million. Nelson said this transaction would be consistent with others. He also emphasized that owner Mark Cuban had a significant role in Nelson being able to bring the D-League to North Texas. "I don't think other owners would do what he's doing," Nelson said. "We wouldn't be here without Mark's approval. He deserves a ton of credit." The D-League has become a strong farm system for the NBA, with about 20 percent of the league having put in time with D-League teams, including Mavericks players such as Brandon Bass and J.J.
